help
I had the bypass surgery on dec 9 and i am a wreck. It seems there has just been one problem afer another.
I was extremly nauseous for the first week, i think this was partly the pain meds.i have panic attacks which can be triggered by nausea,i won't eat bc i am scared i will vomit. i can't take the liqid paxil bc the first time i took it i dr heaved for 4 hrs so i am scared to take it now which makes me an emotional rollar coaster, i will cry over almost anything. I was told allmy meds should be crushed or liquid form, but ive seen other people say they can take their pills, i don' know if i should try that. I know a lo of the emotioal problems are from not having my paxil.....I don't feel i am getting any better.i cant stomach the liquid meals(baratric advantage) i am suppose to drink....basically anything i drink makes me queasy, I was told to substitude boost or ensure for my liquid meals, andi have to cut that with skim milk & still can't get down the 8oz i am suppose to. i burp constantly......i just feel like i am losing it most of the time. I don't feel like i was prepared for surgery, thy told me id be up and about in 2-3 days, feeling fine, which is not the case.....i am regretting having this sugery altough it is nice to see the weight droping off. I can't get used to the constant gurglings in my stomach, i don't understand all the feelings have in my stomach. I am scared something is wrong although i know nothing serious is wrong....i am so scared i will vomit anytime i put anything in my body.....someone please help

Wow, Thats a lot to conquer in the first week. Ok let me try...
1.) Meds
a.) have you tried mixing the paxil with some sort of liquid?
b.) I was told crushed until I was on solids..
c.) everyone is different so you have to see what works for you but I would say its easiest to crush the pills to get it down.
Definitely call the Doctor that prescribed you the paxil and see how they can help you. Since that is part of the problem.
2.) If you don't like bariatric advantage then there are other drinks you can choose (should be low in sugar). I drank Carnation Instant Breakfast (no sugar added) for 1 month post op. That was torture but I did it.
3.) It's normal for some to feel queezy. You just had major surgery on you stomache. Everything is healing. Introducing new foods and drinks to a still healing pouch is not fun for your or your body. Take it slow.. sip slowly.
b.) If you cant take down 8oz in the alotted time.. then don't force it. Work up to it. Take everything slow. If you can only get 4oz then thats fine next time you know 4 oz is our limit then in a couple days try 5. Talk to your nutritionist about this.
4.) Burping/hiccuping is sometimes normal. It usually means you drank to fast, to much, or took in air when you were drinking. Easiest way to remedy this is to take smaller sips more frequently. Maybe that will help? it usually is temporary and will pass as you heal.
5.) Everyone heals at a different rate.. don't worry. Rest and heal up. I, personally, was in bed/in pain for well over a week and I was a pretty active 25 yr old guy at the time.
6.) Maybe you'll learn to love the gurgling of your stomach in time... i know I do. I still laugh at the noises it makes.
Just remember you are still only a week out so take everything slow and try to rest up. You can't go full bore at everything.
Good luck.

This is what's known as hell week hun and it's totally normal and I promise it will pass.
Go to Vitalady.com and get yourself some samples of a bunch of different proteins until you land on one you like.
Are you vomiting everything you eat and drink?
I was allowed to take pills right away, every surgeon is different when it comes to this. The pain meds also tend to cause nausea so ask your surgeon for some medication for it. There are a few options for you there.
Sip as much as you can as often as you can. It will get better!

OK, first of all, if you were on paxil and just suddenly stopped taking it, that may be why you're so nauseous. Paxil causes terribly withdrawal symptoms if you stop it abruptly. It is actually considered by many to be the worst antidepressant to come off of. If you have to stop taking it, you are supposed to do it gradually, reducing the dose a little at a time, over a period of several weeks. That's probably why you're nauseous and probably why you're having panic attacks.
You need to call the doc who prescribes your paxil and talk about what you should do. But you are having withdrawal.
I was able to take my antidepressants in pill form the same day I had surgery. They gave them to me in the hospital that night and I had no trouble swallowing them. Paxil is small pill, right? You should be able to swallow it.
Boost and Ensure are high in sugar, so if you are drinking them and having trouble getting them down, that's probably why. They are poor choices for a protein drink. If you don't like the BA drinks, try a different brand. But get one that is low in sugar. You could do SlimFast low carb, or you can go to Vitalady.com - Protein Supplements, Vitamins & Minerals, and Safe Snacks! and get samples of a bunch of different ones to try.

thank you so much for all of your responses, you have no idea how much i helps to just hear from other people who have been through this. I took the tablet form of my paxil last night, and although it gave me a terrible stomch ache (even though i took verysmall sips of liquid)i do feel better today..i am going to try the baratric advantage again and see how i goes because i do think the boost just has too much sugar and hurts my stomach. thanks again for your helpful responses, i really appreciate it, i don't feel soalone anymore

I'm glad you feel better Lauren. And on here -- if you wave your virtual hand hard enough -- you are NEVER alone.
Things will get better from this point. You really were into meltdown mode.

Call your surgeon. He can give you something for the nausea.

Lauren, Kelly's post was right on it. Ensure is way too high in sugar and it is likely to make you sick to your stomach. At your stage, my doctor had me on clear fluids-skim milk only was added but nothing as rich as Ensure.
I did find sucking on sugar free pops helped me when my stomach felt unsettled.
Having had an ex-beau who was on Paxil and went off of it one weekend and called me for eight hours to cry about his fish dying, I absolutely think you posted in the throes of a Paxil withdrawl meltdown. He was almost instantly better-as it sounds you are, after returning to his dosage the following day. This was a doctor mistake-Paxil is a crazy drug to come off of and you can not do that cold turkey.
But weeping and self pity and self doubt are all totally normal after any surgery, but especially an elective one. So take heart if you still cry at commercials or feel tired, or question everything, that is normal.
So is the crazy noise and gurgling your stomach is doing.
Gastric Bypass is very, very invasive and no walk in the park for your body. There is a lot of adjustment going on within.
It isn't a walk in the park, for sure, but I think 80% of your melt down was the missing Paxil.
Also, don't hesitate to call your Doctor or his PA, they should be at your beck and call if you need them.

Just be aware that it usually takes two to four weeks to build up a therapuetic dose of Paxil in your system, so depending on how long you've been without it, it may take a little time before you get much relief from taking it again. So hang in there.

I crushed my antidepressant and mixed it with those little SF pudding cups on a paper plate. My little granddaughter finished the pudding left in the cup. (Isn't she helpful?)
Don't worry about how much you eat that first month or so. Don't even worry about how much protein you are getting in. Just concentrate on getting used to having your guts re-arranged. Concentrate on how you are melting away every day! Think about all the new clothes you can buy!
Go slow - but keep moving around. Even if you just walk around the outside of your house a couple times every few hours. I can't do that right now, as we had 16 inches of snow last week. But we have a treadmill.
Talk to us. We understand you so well!
