When I was having head hunger really bad my first month after surgery I wanted to just chew the food and then spit it out. Then I was too afraid I would swallow instead of spitting it out so I never did it LOL.

Not sure if it's true but I read on another forum a long time ago (not even sure which now?) that chewing w/o swallowing can cause damage to the pouch as our stomachs prepare for food that never arrives.

I don't know if this is true and I'd love for someone who does know for sure to weigh in on that one? I did it once back in my early food days. But decided that I needed to change the mindset that causes you do to that.

I also licked a crouton once.. two days before I moved from liquids to mushy food at 3 weeks out (for me, was 4 weeks almost cuz of a week in the hospital post-op). I was desperate for a flavor other than chocolate or vanilla.

I can't say whether or not its dangerous for the pouch, but I did it too at about 3 weeks out - chewed steak, swallowed the juices and spit out the soggy chunk of meat. It satisfied the "chew" crave and gave me a flavour other than vanilla or chocolate. The head hunger is horrible but as others have said it does get better with time. I've really never been hungry since the surgery. I too eat by the clock and make sure I get small nutritious meals and shakes.

Thank God I'm over the head hunger stage! I really was not prepared for that. Of course there are still times I would love a huge bowl of ice cream or some Halloween candy but after a few minutes I get over it and move on. I think the holidays are going to be hard because I love baking goodies. But as long as I give them all away or my family eats them right away they won't be around to tempt me.
