As a Christian myself I can understand your question, but I would look towards this verse:

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?”
(1 Corinthians 6:19)

I believe that God wants that temple to be the best that it can be. Use the "new you" as a testimony of what He has done for you throughout the process. I believe that the transformation that occurs with WLS can open doors to testify about what Jesus has done in your life before and during the process of losing weight. You are improving your temple!

If I believed that you should feel guilty about it, I would have to believe the same about heart bypasses, cholsterol drugs, radiation treatments, etc.

Take the gift and go in peace!

Well said, God wants us to take care of our body's, He say's we should try to live in his image. Im a Christian and I never once questioned wheter or not God would approve of disapprove, because I know he want's us to do what we can to take care of ourselves, and besides this is why he gave us doctors and sergeons.

Thanks so much! I have alot to lose, so I sort of expected some big numbers to start. I hit -47 (have not updated my signature yet) at about 3 1/2 weeks and I have been in a bit of a stall since. My doctor told me to get some more calories in from protein. I was only getting about 500 calories a day in. I start working out at the gym with a trainer on Tuesday, so I am hoping that stokes the fire a bit and gets the weight loss moving again.

I just want to clarify if I was not clear from the original post.

I don't think God would be disapproving of WLS. I just feel guilty b/c I sometimes think that God would want me to worry about other things and not my weight. I think I struggle with it b/c I do not have health problems besides the weight. Also, I am def. doing the surgery, not sure what one yet. I keep going back and forth between lap and sleeve.

Again, just wanted to know if anyone else had or has felt the same way?

Thanks for all the replies it does make me feel better.

Hi, As a spiritual person I have never felt any guilt about having the WLS, but I did have tons of guilt about gaining all the weight and making my body toxic and sick. We are guided to what is right by whatever almighty being we hold precious. We struggle every day with decisions, but with the help of our supreme being, all things become clear. If you are sure that you will have this surgery - then you came to that surety because you were guided there and you should feel comfortable in that decision. Allowing yourself to become a healthier, stronger person with Christ at the centre of your life is awesome. The more you struggle with a decision the stronger your resolve once you make the right one for you.

Granted I am not what you might call a 'good' Christian...but I believe this surgery is a life line thrown to me by God to get my health and my life back on track.

How I use or what I chose to do with this tool (GBS) is up to me.

I am very thankful and grateful for the miracle that is this surgery that has given me my life and my health back...

By having this surgery, you are getting another chance to be healthy and take better care of the body you were given...

I never thought I could get WLS. I actually thought I could never afford it and I knew my ins. would never cover it b/c I had no other health problems. I have been praying a lot the past few years about my struggle to lose weight or simply to just not gain anymore. Then I heard that I could get it done for free b/c my husband is in the military. I never thought of it as a blessing and that God was answering my prayers until now. God helped live through my near death experience during pregnancy and God is now helping me with this. I guess there are some perks to my husband being in the service and never being home. I am grateful I have this chance to a new life and body.

I have never felt guilty, I am doing this to better myself. I am a true believer that God does all things for a reason, just praying isn't everything-- it has to be in the story book that God has written for you.

I went through the pre-operation process believing that if I didn't get approved it was because it was not in my story book-- although I'm pretty sure I would have appealed. hehe.

Everything you do and that is done happens for a reason, because you are supposed to live, struggle, love, hate, laugh and frown.

You will find your way. Good luck and keep us updated.

As a born again Christian, NOPE i do not feel guilty. Before i had surgery I prayed and asked God for His "approval" if you will upon this decision and let me tell you that He answered. It was miraculous all the way from how the insurance wasnt going to approve me and God kept saying "the insurance will pay and the surgery will go forth" So finally after everything yes approval went thru and I was blessed with the surgery (that was almost 2 years ago)

Seriously though, with all things you should be prayerful and seek for God's guidance but your answer has already been given
