Default Update 11/11/09: Talked to Donna Today

Hi all, I talked to Donna today by phone and she asked me to let everyone know what's going on. Her computer is down so she can't visit TT, post updates, or receive PMs and emails presently. She's not doing well.

She weighs 96 pounds and can't keep anything down, including small quantities of water. The docs say she needs to gain at least 20 pounds before it is safe to operate on her, but she can't gain weight when she can't eat or drink anything. Her electrolytes are dangerously imbalanced, putting her heart at risk, which complicates any possibility of i.v. or picc line infusions of nutrients. They really need to do a fully open abdominal surgery to clear out the massive adhesions that are strangling her bowels and other organs, but they don't think she'll survive the trauma of such a procedure in her present physical condition, so she keeps getting worse.

She's scared, exhausted, and feeling very alone - please call her to show your concern, love, and support, if you're one of her friends who has her phone number (esp. the SD peeps who might be able to see her in person), and please continue to send her healing thoughts, prayers, love, compassion, whatever good stuff works for you - she needs it!

She was potentially going to be admitted to the hospital today, but if she stays out of the hospital, she'll be seeing a new doc tomorrow, a doctor who has been great with members of her partner, Michelle's, family over the years and who is not afraid to take her on as a patient. I will post any more updates I receive - please do the same if you talk to Donna or Michelle...

Thank you so much for posting this about our friend. I have been thinking of her and wondering how she was doing. I hope she will be hospitalized and perhaps fed straight into her pouch to somehow strengthen her so she can stand the surgery and hopefully have improved health. My heart hurts for her and I will be sending prayers and good vibes her way straight from Toronto. Bless her heart!

I have no understanding of why she is not put on TPN, total parenteral nutrition. This is done for many many nutritional imbalances and you have a central line giving you a high caloric high protein solution into the large veins. It is a life saver and I am amazed she has deteriorated so much before they did anything. I wish her the best.
