I'm Losing My job After 19 Years
I have worked at the same company all my adult life. Literally- I was 17 when I started in the mailroom and have worked for several different departments from customer service to my current role as a data analyst. Now after what will be 19 years (July 2nd) I will no longer have a job as of November 15th 2009. I am so numb right now; I really don’t know what I feel. I’m scared, angry and sad all at once and can not turn to my old friend food.
When I came home yesterday I just sat on the couch and thought I want a Whooper or a bacon cheeseburger. I decided to go to the gym to work out the frustrations. I then just found myself sore and numb. I keep hearing from people how this will be a blessing in disguise. All I can think about is how hard it will be to find any job, let alone one that pays as well as this one did. I have my kids, my wife and a new house to take care of. Suddenly just being fat seems like a small problem and the weight I have lost seems so insignificant.
I don’t think I am asking for answers I am just trying to vent. I know there are no answers and nothing anyone can say to make me feel better. Today I would settle for just feeling something- anything but numb.

I can relate..but not on the same job for that many years. But it sucks no matter what. It is scary, starting over again. I'm glad I did even though it was a long and hard process. Like everything else in my life...nothing came easy
I have you in my thoughts ((((((((((hugs)))))))))))

How horrible.....especially after 17 years...
Are they offering any kind of severence package? Are you eligible for any re-training? Is the company itself closing down or re-locating?
Your mind is pretty numb right now....and pretty soon you will go through the whole roller coaster of emotions...denial, anger, fear, etc....
I know it's cold-comfort but at least you got a few months notice to start planning....

I know exactly how you feel. I was laid off in August 07 after 23 years with my newspaper. I'm the sole breadwinner and I was devastated at first. I was very lucky that I got a severance package that tided us over. Unemployment checks didn't even cover the mortgage. But, I had a new, much better job 5 months later. One thing you have going for you is that you've got a lot of warning -- I had to leave the building that day and no one in management thought to lay in a supply of boxes for all the layoffs.
It feels like your world ended, but I'm am so happy I got out when I did. Journalism is imploding and I got the last good job. Polish up your resume, hit the online job sites, and get ready for a new job. Hit up anyone you know at other companies. Find sites that post jobs in your field.
Good luck!
