Those were cruel things to say. Yes, of course we know we are fat. But that doesn't people should point it out to us. That's just rude. Of course we are sensitive about it. I actually told a friend once, who can't mentioning my weight, that I was sensitive about it and didn't want to talk about it and didn't want her to mention it anymore. Unfortunately, she continued to mention it, and we really aren't friends anymore. I think it would be fine for you to tell your patients that their comments hurt your feelings. Just because they are elderly, that is no excuse for them to be hurtful and rude.

Not one of my finer moments, but there was once a child who was old enough to differentiate between skinny and overweight, black and white, etc. I took my friend to a barber shop to get his hair cut and this little boy was sitting next to his dad... i sat down and i heard the boy say "daddy, why is that girl so fat?". He didn't bother to reprimand his child or correct him or do anything of the sort, so I leaned over to the dad and said to him "tell your child i got so fat by eating rude little boys who's parents don't teach them properly".

now days my response runs more along the lines of "i might be fat, but i can lose the weight. you'll always be an A**hole."

I used to be an aid doing home health care. Had my share of these too , some are mean and some just brutally honest as someone mentioned earlier. Alot of the time its just that they are miserable in their life and sickly enough putting others down gives some people a rise. I dont get it! I feel awful when I unintentionally hurt someones feelings....I cant imagine doing it on purpose. For the last 5yrs I have been doing similar work but work in a group home for developmentally disabled adults. Fortunately they are more child-like and unconditional. Yes sometimes it gets frustrating but in the end its rewarding. They make me smile everyday
Cant wait to get to goal and not hear anymore "fat" comments. Not that someone or other wont find some other flaw to point out LOL. There will always be meanies in the world.
