Unhappy I gained 14 pounds in a month...seriously???

Well... today was my pre-op education class. The day started out with the requisite weigh in. Over the last two weeks, I have been throwing a little bit of a "food funeral" for myself to say goodbye to my old friend, junk food. Well turns out my idea of saying goodbye to the crap that got me where I am in the first place was not a very good idea. I have gained 14 pounds since my meeting with the surgeon a month ago. This prompted him to postpone my surgery.

I am still below the weight that I was when I started this process, which is what I thought was what I needed to be. I did not think about the fact that if I gained any weight before the surgery, it may be postponed. I was speaking with my nurse and my insurance specialist and they said that they will try to talk with him one more time to see if there is any possibility of him changing his mind. I decided to write a letter to him as well in hope that he will reconsider. If anyone would like to comment and give me any advice, I would really appreciate it!

Here is the letter:

I am writing in the hope that you may reconsider your decision to postpone my surgery. I realize that it may not help, but I figured that it couldn't hurt. I do not want to make any excuses for the weight gain that I have had in the last month as the fault and blame lies solely with me. I equate the last two weeks of my eating habits with that of a drug addict who is going to rehab. I have decided that my life and the way that I approach food is going to change, but part of that decision unfortunately included the "food funeral" that I have been holding to say goodbye to the comfort that I have turned to all of my life.

I do not plan to use this surgery as the easy way out and I know that it will probably be one of the hardest things that I ever do. I believe the reason that I felt so strongly that I had to "say goodbye" to the foods that I have been eating is because I will never be eating these foods again. I truly have said goodbye to these foods as they are nowhere near as important to me as my health. I am ready to change my life, not just my pant size. I am not looking at this surgery as a way to help me lose weight so that I can eat the way that I used to again. I will never eat that way again. I am 1,000,000% committed to changing my life and following every instruction given to me in conjunction with the tool of gastric bypass surgery. I have shopped and prepared for the 2 week pre-op diet and will follow every single detail that Kelsey laid out for me today.

The timing of my October 9th surgery date is absolutely perfect for many reasons, which is why I am hopeful that you may reconsider. Yes, some of the reasons have to do with convenience in conjunction with scheduled time off from work and the plan that I have made for myself time wise following the surgery, but the main reason is that I turn 30 on October 26th. I see my thirties as the beginning of a new chapter in my life. I was really hoping to have gotten a head start on that new chapter by having the surgery on the 9th so I can celebrate turning 30 with the knowledge that I have done the best thing for myself that I can to ensure that I will be around for many birthdays to come.

I understand that your decision to postpone my surgery was made with my best interest at heart, but I beg of you to reconsider. I am so confident that I am ready and committed to my new life, I guarantee that you will not be sorry and that I will be your most successful gastric bypass surgery patient.

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this plea and please know that I am willing to do anything to prove that I am committed to my new life, even if that means coming to the clinic every day for the next two weeks to be weighed. I will do anything I can to prove my level of commitment to you and I would appreciate the opportunity to do so.

Thank you,

You are very articulate and your letter looks great. In fact, I'm ready to approve your surgery myself!

I've got my fingers crossed for you and hope things swing your way.

Yep, the ole "BUCKET LIST", its a killer!!

My surgeon told me at my office visit....dont gain ANY weight. Very non shalaunt, and I heard later that he did the same thing that happened to you for gaining 2 pounds!!! She had to wait for another 6 weeks for surgery.

Good luck with your letter, it looks good to me, but then again, Im not making the decision!!

Thanks for the support guys! I will make sure that I update the thread when I find something out, which should be Friday.

The thing that kills me the most is that I have actually lost about 40 lbs. since my highest weight...I hate that I assumed that I would be okay as long as I didn't gain more than my starting weight!

I agree with Mike, YOUR APPROVED!

Just wondering if your doing a crash diet to show him that you can get it off too. I think I would start on the liquid diets to drop pounds quickly. Protein does keep you from being hungry a lttle longer.

Hey Paula,
Tomorrow was supposed to be the start of my two week liquid pre-op diet and I will be on that whether my surgery date remains the 9th or it is pushed out! I just really hope that he reconsiders!

Default I understand how you feel

I have to meet my surgeon one week from tomorrow. The last time I was officially weighed in was 7/22.... It's my biggest fear that I will have gained weight during this 2.5 months of waiting to meet him. They had warned me that if I gained it "could" prolong the process or the insurance could deny it based on my gain.

My goal has been to maintain... I am about 4 pounds less than in July....

PS - I can gain 7 pounds in one 3-day weekend

Good luck to you!
