I'm probably going to come off as the unpopular voice here, but I agree with your surgeon. I was told that I was not allowed to engage in what mine called "Last Supper Syndrome". The reason for this...the pre-op diet is to shrink your liver so to help ensure the surgery goes as planned. It's also a boost to the insurance company to show that you're committed to this lifestyle change. Food addict or not, there was a reason you're requested to not gain any weight.

So yeah, sucks that your surgery got pushed back. You'll have to let us know what the surgeon thinks of the letter.

Hi there!

Thank you very much for the feedback. I do want to make sure though that I am clear about the situation. My surgery is scheduled (hopefully still) for October 9th. My pre-op diet begins tomorrow, September 25th and I will be following the pre-op diet to a T. I was always told that I had to be under the weight that I was when I attended the info session which I am well below. In addition to that, I expect to lose at least 10 pounds on my two week liquid pre-op diet.

I absolutely understand the reasoning behind the request to not gain weight, I however was always told that as long as I was below the weight I started this process at a year ago I would be fine.

I do appreciate you bringing up another side/viewpoint on the situation. I very much appreciate the advice and hopefully someone else can benefit from it as well so that they don't make the same mistake that I did.

And of course, I will absolutely update the thread when I find something out!

One more quick thing to add to this before I go to bed...

One of the reasons that I am so frustrated about this is that in the past when I have been on some sort of diet I always do lose weight and it gives me the false hope/illusion that I "don't really need the surgery." So I stick with that for a month or two, but then whatever the diet may be stops to be effective for me. I have been on a diet since I was like 8 years old. I know that WLS is the only thing that is going to work for me and I am sick of waiting to start my new life.

However, whatever the outcome of the letter may be, I am starting my liquid diet tomorrow and if I have to do it for 5 weeks before surgery then so be it...I will be successful at this!!!

I don't know Tisi, If I were the doc, I'd say 'show me' ...get serious now...those gained pounds make the surgery more difficult for your doctor, and more dangerous for you. Get serious, honey, get on the slimfast or protein shakes and show them how truly serious you are about a change...just sayin...we were told in no uncertain terms NOT to gain ANy weight...

I am going to show him...and I am a-ok with being late to work every day for two weeks if he wants me to come in and get weighed every morning up until my surgery. Liquid diet is all shopped for and ready to go...breakfast and lunch are both set up in the fridge and ready to go for the moment that tomorrow comes! My life is changing whether my surgery is on October 9th or not!!!

I know this must have been frustrating. But...yes I'm going with the unpopular response too....when the surgeons tell you don't gain weight....they mean it. Actions speak louder than words. Just get back on track like you are doing. You have to keep reminding yourself that you HAVE to change to be successful. We've all lost weight before but we gain it back. I've seen a lot of surgeries cancelled because of weight gain and I have to agree. You really have to be committed. But also remember the tragedy is not making the mistake....it's not learning from it. You can do this. Stay strong and use all the support systems you can. Good luck to you Sue
