Default pre op diet almost over - but im so annoyed

Hi all,

As you may or may not know from a previous post, I have now been on my pre op diet for 13/14 days. You guys were right... it does get easier as the days go on. But boy I am feeling so down today for reasons that will become clear as you read on.

Starting Weight & BMI
BMI = 54.3
Weight = 186.6kg

First Weigh In 3 days in

BMI = 53.6
Weight = 181.5kg

Second Weigh In 7 days in
BMI = 51.6
Weight = 172.9kg

Third Weigh In 10 Days in
BMI = 50.4
Weight = 170.5kg

Yesterday, I was in a situation where there was NO way that I could heat soup, or keep yoghurts cold. So I rang my pre op nurse and told her I would be quite happy not to eat anything. She said as I was doing so well, I could have a small chicken salad as long as I go straight back on the diet.... as it happened i didnt eat anything else apart from that salad. (no soups in the evening).

Todays Weigh IN = 13 days in

BMI = 52.3
Weight = 175.2kg
+5kg in one chicken salad!!!

I am horrified!!! how can 1 small plain chicken salad pile on over 5kg.

I was so proud of my pre op loss, now i feel a failure.

Carl.
PS saying all that, I had not gone to the toilet (either no1 or no2 prior to weighing myself and did have an awful lot of liquid yesterday, so maybe that would be a couple of lbs. is that possible.

Carl,
You're retaining fluid! One or two more days with your pre-op diet as planned, it'll be gone...best of all, once you have your surgery, it's not going to come back! YAY! Keep up the great work...

nobody has mentioned a bowel prep.

also why would i suddenly retain fluid when all along there has been constant weight loss?

Carl.
PS
gone no1 & no2 now so will do final weigh in tomorrow.

Perhaps there was a lot of sodium in the salad? Sodium will make you retain fluid.

I would bet it was from sodium in the chicken salad. It all depends on what your pre-op diet has been consisting of but when you don't know for sure what an item has in it sometimes the nutritional information can be horrifying. I know, for instance, I work in a hospital and we carry breakfast type sandwiches or cheeseburgers that you can throw in the microwave for patients for snacks. You would think, sure, there are probably some calories in here and some fat but not too high considering it's some cheap sandwich. I looked at the back of one of the packages the other day and there was damn near 900 calories in the cheeseburger. And this is nothing gormet by any means.

Also, when you are so strict with eating your body can do funny things, especially as you try to lose weight. I would just get back on your plan and try to relax. Weigh yourself in the morning after having gone to the bathroom. I think most of us post-oppers do that anyways to make sure we really have an understanding of where we are.

Good luck, you will be fine!

Weight loss is a funny thing. Even after I had the surgery, I would lose 2 lbs, then gain a lb. I made the mistake of torturing myself by weighing myself every day.Yes...I was a scale whore. I lost a total of 150 lbs, but I swear I actually lost 450 lbs with all the times I would go up a lbs and down a lb and up a lb and down a lb. If you bought that salad out, it was probably loaded with sodium. And yes...you can gain as much as 5 lbs with retaining water in a day. Been there..done that. Don't worry, you are doing great. Sue

If you follow the pre-op diet and your medical team's instructions, no worries. Forget the scales for now. I know that's a big change, but seriously. don't torture yourself. This is only the beginning of what will be up & down scales until you eventually lose the excess weight.

That's the #1 best advice we can give... don't torture yourself by watching and analyzing every pound here and there. It will seriously mess you up for absolutely no good.
