Ouch!
Hey all! I'm new to the forum so I'm not anticipating a huge response to this or anything but I figured here was as good a place as any to write down how I'm feeling.
I had the surgery three days ago and things have been going pretty well so far. The pain hasn't been unbearable. I've been getting headaches and fatigue quite a bit but I know that's to be expected. And I haven't suffered nausea until tonight And it's rough. I'm trying to figure out what happened because I'm barely eating anything (the baby foods and what not,) but I think we (my parents and I,) figured it out. My mom got me small curd cottage cheese but did not get the fat free kind. Could that be to blame for my sick feeling or is it most likely something else? I'm so frustrated right now because I just feel like junk. I know that's to be expected but it's just really hard to deal with right now because I'm not used to being sick and it's hitting me all at once. Any idea when I'll start to feel better? I've been feeling nauseated on and off now for over an hour. It is also making me hesitant to take my pain medicine because it's liquid and I'm afraid that it's going to cause more harm with my nausea than good with anything else. Thoughts?
I guess I'm just having a rough day. I know they come and go but any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks so much for listening to me complain!
God Bless!

welcome to TT
I am actually surprised that you are eating at all on day 3.Take your time and eat slow.If you feel sick just rest and drink. Those are most important right now.Congrats on your surgery!

I was going to say the exact same thing......i was on a clear liquid diet for the first week after surgery, then onto pureed creamed soups and protein shakes for the next two weeks.
I am pretty new (2 months), but it so strange how all different doctors follow different food plans.....from what i have read on TT.
Good Luck and a big Congrats on your surgery

First of all.. welcome to the forum.
I too was on clear liquid for the first week after surgery... then I got to add cream of wheat or rice cereal (gag), then about 5 days later got to add protein shakes... THEN after 2 full weeks I could have cottage cheese (non-fat though), cheese, ground meat, etc..
This Monday is my FINAL STEP (YAY).. get to have beans, edamame, more meat, rice, pasta, etc... (all still in very small quantities)
anyway.. long story short u could feel sick from the fat or maybe to soon for cottage cheese.

Be sure you are getting in PROTEIN...and LOTS OF WATER! Fluids are Very, Very important during the early stages of post-op. If you are questioning your food intake, a call to your Surgeon/Nutritionist is in order. Do have a record of exactly what your intake has been...down to the ounce/ML. That will help them out and give them an idea of what you may need to change or add, or whatnot. Calling with questions like these is what we paid those guys the big bucks for. For myself...I was on clear liquids for the first two weeks...so I can't comment on your dietary guides...that's your Surgeons call. As you may have realized by now, not all surgeries are alike and not all Surgeons do things the same. It's best to go with what YOUR Dr. perscribes.
Best of luck.

I was on clear liquids for a least a month. Go back to liquids and give your surgeon a call.

Same as others have said
Foods at this stage are not what your pouch can handle.
Liquid diet should be all you are on three days post op. The cottage cheese was not safe, fat free or not, it's not what your body can handle right now. Plain and simple.
As others have said, the textured food has to wait. And then it should only be SOFT foods, like yogurt (or baby food as you mentioned. At just three days out, the most commonly recommended diet should be:
broths
protein shakes
water
popsicles - sugar free
and liquid stuff like that. ONLY.
The food you had made you feel bad because your pouch is nowhere NEAR ready for that stuff. Do you have the list of foods your surgeon gave you for each stage of recovery? The week by week progression of foods? That is essential and it should be your guideline, while also keeping in mind that your body may vary and you may not be able to progress to the next stage right when the list says you can. It's trial and error for us all.
If you stick to liquids for another week and then try the next level of advisable foods on the list your surgeon gave you, then you will not have bouts of pain like the one you had.
It will get better, but you HAVE to remember that your insides have been cut apart and you have open wounds in your digestive system. Liquids are all that the body can take right now. Period.
I hope that all the replies you got have answered why you were in pain and felt sick after eating the foods you ate?

Well my diet is as follows:
pureed foods for three weeks
mechanical soft foods for four weeks
soft food for four weeks
regular foods in moderation from then on.
Yeah, it definitely makes sense that my body would be healing and everything and that liquids would be best at this point. I know my surgeon said otherwise so maybe I'll talk to him before I make any changes to my diet.. but yeah, I definitely have a hard time eating anything (less than one of those little medicine cups for the most part.) I think what I'll do is chill out with the clear liquids until monday...try to get my calories in with popsicles and continue to take my medicines and my vitamins...see how that goes. It was really nice to hear back from everyone!
How long did it take everyone to feel pretty much back to normal?
Thanks for the kind words and I look forward to getting to know everyone from his or her posts!
Thanks again,
Jess

Back to normal isn't applicable
"Back to normal" isn't applicable, but I know what you mean. Everyone varies, but I think my period was about 2 months. Then the other struggles started. The ones related to my body being completely different. But YMMV.
