Default Update on Sirmikey

Ok, I haven't been to bed since 3:00am on Thursday morning, so excuse typo's, grammer, length, etc. I'm off to sleep in minutes so I can get back to the hospital in Grinnell early!

What a saga this is! Mike started having new and unusual pains Thursday after eating his dinner..about 5. By 7 I talked him into going to the walk in clinic where Skippy the wonder Doctor told him to take Mylanta and muscle relaxers. Yea....go with your gut folks!!! That's a lazy doctors way out
of getting involved!! Anyway - two hours after that we were in the ER with Mike doubled over in pain, horrid spasms spiking the pain to boot. He'd agree with everyone else...worst pain ever. I felt so bad just sitting there rubbing his leg...what else can you do but wait on the ER staff to actually move! The ER PA (no doc) got him on morphine and ordered x-rays. More morphine, blood tests, more morphine, urine tests, more morphine Cat Scan - one with and one without contrast...then switch to different pain med - diludad??? More pain meds, more time. Extreme nausea, total body itching..(reaction to pain med diludad we think??? No one told us.) About 4 am the PA comes in and says she's leaving, the ER doc will take over. We've never seen him yet. But he walks in and tells Mike we can go to Grinnell or see a surgeon there. Of course we opt for the surgeon where we are!! Then Dopey the wonder Doc (seeing a pattern??) says "ok, we'll admit you and the surgeon will see you in rounds."
Well, ummm, ok? Off we go to some admitting floor and see two nurses (overworked - underpaid group in my opinion!!!) for another couple hours. This by the way is the FIRST TIME Mike was given ANY IV fluids!!!! Then off to another floor for a room. The surgeon says - no go, I won't treat him - told the ER doc that last night. From there a several hour fiasco involving an ambulance ride scheduled for 9:00am and takes place at 11:15. GRRRRRR. We get to Grinnell - Dr Coster has already called to ask if Mike is there twice and shows up in less than 5 min. He orders a boulis (sp???) of fluids and reviews all the charts. He quickly determined going in for surgery right then wasn't good for Mike - he's way dehydrated. Dr Coster had him on the right track, right meds and in a room in 30 min. So, he's spent the day on Diludad - the reaction was from the morphine I guess, and getting stable.

Tomorrow morning...more x-rays. IF he is 100% better, all has corrected itself. If not, camera scope to see if they can easily correct a small issue. Otherwise, total open...full out surgery. I'm praying for the best here. Mike's biggest concern?? His boss is scheduled to go on vacation in two weeks and won't be able to if Mike's off. Typical Mike. I told him and his boss told him...that's not an issue..just get better soon!

I left Mike tonight gripping the PCA pump with both hands mostly asleep. Poor guy. I'll keep you all updated on what happens tomorrow. Thank you so much for the kind words and prayers!!!

Wow, I am new here so not sure who everyone is. Doesn't sound good. Is it a stricture? Hope Mike gets the care he needs. I can't believe the hospital didn't put an IV in right away. Keep us updated.

Wow Penny! I can't think of too many ways they could've screwed his care up without outright killing him! IV first and foremost. It's not just for rehydration, which is vital for someone puking their (abbreviated!) guts out, it is a way to get meds into him via the fast lane. When I had my obstruction, Dilaudid barely cut the pain at all, so morphine has about as much effect as a baby aspirin. Then to route a 'possible' bowel obstruction to a hospital over an hour away is malpractice pure and simple, especially if they had already done diagnostic testing. Tell the docs in Grinnell that you would like copies of the scans and the reports for your 'family doctor' and that you will see that s/he gets them. Then hold on to them....stuff has a way of disappearing from charts when it's clear a major mistake has occurred. At that point it shouldn't have mattered who did the bypass--he is sick enough that getting him well should have taken the top priority. If a kid falls and breaks their arm, it's not necessary for the doc who delivered him to set the break and cast it, for instance.

I'm glad he survived the journey to Grinnell and that his WLS doc is on board now. Did they put in an NG tube to try to relieve the pressure on his Y limb?

Oh, Lordy, this so much reminds me of my obstruction in 10/06. I'm so very worried for him--I hope this is as bad as it gets for him, it's totally bad enough as it is! Tell him I'm sending him strong healing energy. Doc Coster sounds like he knows what to do and is doing it STAT for Mike. Maybe you could pick someone on the forum to keep in touch with and they can post his progress for you. I would volunteer myself, but I must confess I will be busy and not at my computer too much today. But know that you will be on my mind.

Take good care of you, Penny. He is going to need you a lot when this is all overwith. It's a hard complication, I won't sugarcoat it--but it sounds as if he is in the right place now and that they will take good care of him.

Give Mike my best!
Donna
