Addictions after WLS....
Here's the update on my hubby.
He finally had his f/u appt with his PCP. His doctor put it bluntly: He must quite one addiction now, for the rest of his life and severely restrict the other two or he will die in 2-3 years. His doc reiterated that my husband was at death's door with his GI bleed. His doc doesn't think he will get a third chance at life if he keeps up smoking, drinking, and caffeine.
He got his first chance at a new life with WLS. His second chance by getting to the hospital when he did and getting treated. He has a great chance of another GI bleed, which could end up be worse than the one he got. Because of the WLS, his doc is more concerned over the effects of these habits on his gut more so than worrying about liver or lung problems.
I implore everyone to examine their post-op lives and not take for granted this new lease you all have. Work on whatever emotional issues in a constructive way and not replace the eating addiction with another, just as destructive crutch.
