Pills Pills Pills
Hay everyone, when were you able to not have to crush your pills? Once you took whole pills, did anyone have problems with getting stuck in your new small opening of your stomach? I am being told tomorrow I can take them whole, but I'm scared they will get stuck. How many pills do you take now? I think after 6 months I can take fewer, how about you guys?

When I was told I could start taking pills, I was also advised to get a pill splitter.
Initially, I chopped my pills into 1/3rds or 1/4's and then took them with a spoonful of Mott's (no sugar added) Apple Sauce.
Now I just taken them as is.

I was taking those giant horse sized LorTab before I left the hospital. I never had to crush anything. Now that I'm off the BP meds and the Diabetes meds, I take a sub lingual B12, a multivitamin, Singulair, and that's it.
Never had a problem with them going through the stomach. Getting that vitamin down my throat without gagging took a little practice, but it's pretty smooth now...
Hope this helps!

I started swallowing pills at 2 weeks postop. I was thrilled because some of the pills I had to take tasted terrible crushed up. I've never had a problem with them getting stuck though the PA at my surgeon's office said he has seen pills stuck when they have done an EGD on some patients. He recommended not taking all at one time and breaking the large ones in half. I've been taking all of mine at one time including the huge calcium citrate without problems but I suppose there is always that risk earlier out of getting them stuck.

Good timing on this question! I'm out of my liquid Paxil and am switching back to the pills tonight... it's a small pill, but I will cut it up a bit first...
I've also ignored my folic acid and extra vit. D because it's such a pain to crush them... I guess I'll wait until my appt. next week to see what they have to say... what diff. do a few days make anyway?
BTW: Liquid Paxil is NASTYNASTYNASTY stuff!

Not sure exactly but
I am not sure when it was that I started pills, but pretty quickly, if I remeber. Start out, of course, 1 pill at a time, and split ONLY those that can be split safely-not capsules or those that are coated. Now, 2 years out, I can take a handful of pills all together (6-7 at a time).

WOW that is great weight loss...congratulations...
I have been told, because of my age and weight loss I will need a Tummy Tuck etc. Afer having this bipass surgery, I dont ever want a surgery again. I had a horrible first week of not sleeping, panic attacks etc...but no pain. Does the TT hurt? How long before you were up and around. You probably HAD to get out of bed for walks right away but what about wanting to get out and do things? Do you regret anything? What about the body lift?

Thank you Dawn.
In regards to the TT it most certainly wasn't a picnic when it came to the pain. I had the full tummy tuck which included muscle tightening along with a breast lift. It was a 6 hour surgery. I don't do well with general anesthesia so I was nauseated that whole first evening with dry heaves. They wanted me out of bed that first night but never made it further than standing by the bed before the dry heaves started. By the next morning I was able to get up with some help, they took the pain pump away from me and I started on pain pills along with an occasional IV pain med. I pretty much kept up with something for pain every 4 hours. I was in the hospital for 3 nights but that was because my pcp didn't want me to go home with my DH throwing up from the flu.
At home I took pain meds like every 6 hours for a couple days but by the second week it was maybe just once a day before bed. I was up walking around pretty good by the second day after surgery. I spent time outside in the healing garden at the hospital and wandered around visiting the unit where I work. So the pain didn't keep me from walking around, It hurt the most getting up and and down from bed.
I would say the biggest thing for me is that I was absolutely exhausted for quite some time. I lost alot of blood and was anemic so it wasn't unusual for me to crash once or twice a day on the couch for an hour or so. I pretty much felt like I was hit by a MAC truck for the first 3 weeks but gradually it did get better. I was off work for 6 weeks but I'm a nurse who does a lot of lifting and my PS really didn't want me working until that point. When I went back I was fine. The biggest thing was occasional muscle spasms in my abdomen where he tightened everything down. They weren't what I would call really painful but if you've ever been pregnant they felt a lot like Braxton Hicks contractions.
I did have drains...4 of them...two came out a week postop and the other 2 came out about 2 1/2 weeks postop.
Even with the pain, tiredness, etc I would do it in a heartbeat. I had 10 pounds of skin removed and it feels so good not to have the weight of my panni. The backpain, rashes, neck pain all went away and my blood pressure even finally came down to normal without meds! Before that I was still requiring one med for my blood pressure.
For my mental well being? It also has been fantastic. I finally have gotten to the point that I don't feel fat any more. I actually am finally beginning to feel like a normal person. Things certainly aren't perfect but hey, I'm almost 52 years old and had 3 kids...when I went into the plastics I wasn't looking for perfection, only a feeling of normalcy and I got it.

My doc has instructed me to crush or chew anything pillwise that I can not suck throught a straw. I agree with most of them tasting horrible crushed. I have been taking the junior tyenol chewables when needed because I cant stand the taste of crushed tylenol. As of today I am on three calcium chewables, biotin, two flintstone chewables and a vitamin D everyday. I also take two b12 tablets once a week.

I have been taking my tablets whole since the day after my surgery - and some of them are HUGE.
Good luck!
