Default Part Of The New Me......

part of the new me for 2008 is to go to church.........this may sound weird but i've never been raised in a church going family........NEVER.......sure i went to kid church when i was a kid but that's it.......so, the other day my son asked me if we were christian..........after thinking long and hard about the choices i've made for the new year, i've decided to take my kids (they are 15 & 10) to church services on sunday.....i guess i should give them the opportunity to explore god and the bible huh?..........i feel like such a bad parent for not including this in their lives but the years have just flown by and i never thought about it......being a single mom for the past 5 years, i have struggled with every roller coaster possible and i wish i'd had a church to turn to that would help me thru this.......i didn't though....but, i don't want my kids to experience what i have........is it too late for this? I hope not.....I hope that we can learn together, ya know?........hell, i don't even know what religion to choose.....i was looking at my dog tags from when i served the army and on the religion line it says "no preference".........can you believe that!!!! no preference........that's crazy!!!! well i talked to a friend and she had invited us to atten her church on sunday with her and her kids......it's a methodist church and i'm excited about this new chapter in my life.........i just had to share......thanks for listening

Default You've done well.

Don't beat your-self up over not having exposed your children to an actual religion. I too went to Sunday school (for a very short period), but never went to church. Now that my kids are older (18 and 15) they don't believe in "God"...which makes me feel like such a failure as a parent! But they know that I believe in "God", in a higher power, and that even though I do not go to church...I live a good, honest life.

I'm glad that your kids are willing to go to a church. It's hard to decide what religion works for you. Good luck on your new journey!

Default Prayers and Good Wishes

Tricia, I just wanted to send some prayers and good wishes your way as you begin the search for a spiritual home. My suggestion is to visit a lot of churches of different denominations, plus any non-Christian options (Buddhism or Judaism, for example) that you think might fit your belief system. Don't be afraid to ask questions!

I was raised first as a Methodist and then as a Baptist, the latter of which soured me on organized religion and "Christians" for a loooooong time. I had always loved the pomp and ceremony of Roman Catholic masses, but as a gay man, I had some real disagreement with the Church's stance on gays, women in the church, etc. As part of my spiritual journey, I joined an Episcopal church around three years ago and have definitely found where I want and need to be. I've been privileged to meet many "seekers" on my journey and am amazed at how diverse our paths are, all seeking the place where we feel at home. Wherever your path takes you (and your family), I hope you enjoy the journey!

Glad to hear your choice. Definately don't beat yourself up over it, even if you weren't to show your kids religion, take them to church etc, they will realize what they believe later on in life.

I came from a family that pretty much never went to church, and really didn't discuss religion too much. My grandma was really big into church, so I went with her once or twice.

For years, I thought there was no such thing as religion, now i'm coming to realize I believe. I don't know what I believe in, but I believe in a higher power.

Anyhow enough of my rambling. What i'm trying to say is, at 21 I realized that i've been missing. You're kids will realize too. You're not a bad parent at all.
