Question Question of the week 3/7/05

Okey dokey, seeing as how mostly post ops say respond to my question of the week.. I will pose a question that only they can answer. Unless you are a preop or at the curious stage now, you may have had this experience to share as well..... if you dare

What are some of the most funny, flattering, cruddy, wonderful compliments (or not so complimentary) remarks you have gotten from other people as a reult of your weight loss?

Anyone who has had a significant weightloss story to share, regardless if preop is always appreciated!

Cant wait to read about these!

Talking Okay I'll start!

What I hear often, from men and women is "Wow arent you oe tall drink of water." It makes me laugh... what does that mean exactly? Its funny how people never commented on my height when I was, well... rounder.
Now people approach me, both men and women and want to know how tall I am. Its funny and wonderful at the same time!

There's always the "Your too thin now" comment, Im gonna start using Phil's response for that one.... "Too thin for what?" I love it!

Okay, these are flattering and irritating at the same time. I have had friends and acquaintances tell me recently that I need to stop losing weight. WTF??? I am still almost 200 lbs and they think that that is enough???? Not for me!
They can tell me that in another 30 pounds but not now! Also, the looks from the opposite sex now. I ain't ready for that so put your eyes back in your head dude! Thanks for letting me vent!

Thumbs up Comments

Under my "Rude Comments" post you will find the ones I endured the most. I had someone say the other night that they could see right through me, my Dad told me I was getting too skinny (MY DAD!!!) but the most flattering is when Stuart looks at me the way he does and tells me how beautiful I am. That always feels good.

I had many rude ones like people who don't even know me telling me I have no business wearing something.. like a pleated skirt that went to my knees.. whatever! It wasn't like I was exposing my pannis with a midrift shirt or anything... geez... I mean I can do it if she wants me too!! LOL

Anyway I get all kinds of comments, but now people have laid off pretty much and just let me be me.. and I like that much better..

Hmm, how about "In another week I am not gonna know you", or "If you turn sideways you will disappear". Yeah, right, Nowhere close to that yet!! And I had a guy checking me out the other day and winking! Yikes, that really unnerved me!!

The one I heard the most, that irritated me the most, is "Your husband must really love you now" (Now that I lost all the weight). My husband met me, dated me, fell in love with me, married me and impregnated me, all before I lost a pound. Yes, he's happy with my success and likes the new figure, but the love was always there.

Unhappy

I am only two weeks out and have lost 22lbs as of today. Yesterday, a dear friend of mine said, " You can't tell you lost a pound. I can't believe you went through all of this for nothing." I was devistated!!! I tried to explain that was alot for two weeks and she just said, "whatever." I think I am going to re-evaluate our friendship. I know that it's early and I will lose more!!!

Default Comments; Compliments

My daughter told me that the "older" men are "checking" me out!
My doctor said, "Wow, your legs are so skinny now." She said, "I'd LOVE to have skinny legs."
A lady at work said, "You're losing weight! I almost didn't know you. Your husband is probably happy now!"
My grand daughter said, "I even loved you when you were 'fluffy' and you still put the "X" in sexy!"
My sister said, "Barb, I wouldn't mind if you didn't lose another pound. You very classy."
Freddy says (as he hugs me close with BOTH arms wrapped around me), "Who ever would have guessed you would be just little?"

No negative comments that I am aware of...
I went in knowing I wanted to be healthier and that has happened. I feel better every single day; am moving ahead slowly, but like a glacier, still moving. The side affects are mounting up though...new shoes, new clothes, now a size 12 instead of 22-24, appreciative glances, move freely, more agility, more energy, friendlier acceptance, and that woman I see in the mirror is getting more familiar every single day.

Thanks, Bridget for asking the question!

Red face Oh Brother!

I may think of other responses, but my funniest and yet most irritating responses continue to be from my one and only brother. When I was overweight, he used to call me at work and say, "Dara, Jenny Craig's calling." Ha ha, very funny.

Now that I'm below goal, he's constantly making skinny comments. He calls work and asks for Karen Carpenter or Calista Flockhart (the receptionists think it's hysterical). He says I look like a finch. When I call him, he answers me with cawing sounds like a bird. When he talks to me, he'll ask if I'm sharpening my beak on my cuttlebone.

I just talked to him on the phone and he said, "Don't you have an urge to fly south?"

I have to admit that it's pretty funny and I can't help but laugh when he does it! Oh the joys of having a little brother!

Talking Dara

I can only imagine.... your post made me laugh out load. Your lil bro seems like a big kick in the pants! Thanks for your story.

** Side note, I was talking to a guy yesterday who knew me preoperatively and he was telling me about his Valentine let down this year, I told him that I would be more than happy to be his Valentine next year.... he responded, "Yeah right, I dont get girls like you.... girls that look like super models. Your too hot now." I said, "What do you mean NOW?" He responded, "Uh-oh" I left it alone after that... is ignorance really as blissful as people say it is? lol
