ouch!! that hurt!
As some of you may know my surgery date is oct. 23rd.. I'm so nervous that something will happen to spoil the plans. Everyday I wait for a phone call, Everyday I try to stay healthy. I've done alot of yard work to keep me exercising... My musssles ache most days after doing some raking or hauling dirt ect... I was able to find someone giving away horse manure... I thought it would be good to add fertilizer to my new garden beds and trees as well. So... I dug out the old dirt, leaving holes for the fertilizer. Yesterday, Saterday mornin' I went out to water the plants and get started on my journey to pic up the truckload of fertilizer. When, I walked into one of my holes not realizing it and down I went. Laying on the ground, "Now, What have I done?", I said. The pain was really bad at first, but I was able to rotate my ankle and I new it was not broken because I could move my toes. So, I sat up for a min, regaining myself, pushed myself up and limped my way to the shovel and then loaded up the truck with tarp and tiedown straps.. My husband and son came along and helped load all the manure in the truck. When I got back, I could feel the swelling over the arch of my shoe but I didn't stop working. We unloaded all the fertilizer and smoothe out most of the beds, watered them down and came inside. Well... by this time my ankle was very swollen and I had a hard time limping over to the chair.
Now I suffer!... very swollen ankle, barely able to walk to the bathroom or back. The pain is quite bad. The worst part is that I have absolutely nothing to do but sit. What I'm thinking is that I will be stir crazy after the surgery. I just can't emagine being layed up like this for a week much less 3 weeks.
I'm hoping I will be completely healed before the surgery. So, Now I rest. Anyone know a good trick to recovering a sprained ankle. Ice hurts way too much.
Well... while I wait for another blow because everything comes in three's I can only hope they happen before surgery and not after or during.
need to put the old foot elevated again...
bye for now.

Take some Motrin (while you still can) and talk to your doc in the morning...

Maintaining within a few pounds up and down. 130 is my "I must not go over it" weight, and it doesn't seem to be a problem.

Rice
Rest, ice, compression, elevation. If you use frozen peas or corn, it hurts less than ice... don't know why, but it does. Stay off it, get it up in the air above your heart, ice it, and wrap it... I've sprained my ankles dozens of times. The only thing that really helps is time and not re-hurting it for a while... sorry.

This made me hungry! rice, peas, corn lol... all things I dont eat now.. but sounds good to me!
On a serious note.. feel better.. elevate it...and keep it cold, it hurts now right? And it hurts with ice right? But it will hurt less long with the ice!

Janine! I'm so sorry about your fall! Please do keep it elevated and see your doctor tomorrow. A sprain can be every bit as painful as a break... and can take a long while to heal.
Hope you feel better quickly!

Ouch! So sorry. Sounds like you're doing really well with keeping active out in the yard, but the people above are right. You have to let it heal before you try to be active again. Sucks, I know.
Also, as to resting after surgery -- in my experience, your frame of mind post-op is not the same is it is normally. To be really honest, you will feel fuzzy, in some amount of pain, tired, and your energy level will be low. If you take the pain meds, the fuzziness will be even more prevalent. For me, this meant that time passed quickly and between trying to eat, drink, and walk, the days flew by. I can hardly believe it's already been three weeks!! You might be restless after awhile, but I honestly doubt it will compare to the restlessness of sitting around on a normal day.

thanks to all for the advice...
The wrap seemed to help and the swelling has come down. I can put more pressure on the foot this mornin'. Now, my back has increasing pain too. I guess from walking crooked and sitting so much. It's been a few months since I fealt this nagging pain in my back. I had lost 30 lbs and the pain went away, now with the fall and the limp, the pain is back. I hate not being able to do things, especially now since I have so much to do in preperation for being ill for such a lengthy time. I have to get some of my fish out of my pond since the weather is getting cooler at night and the water is close to 70degrees. I hate to ask for help but I guess I'll have to this time... I can't possibly work around all that rock and not hurt myself in the process. Well, enough ranting and raving it's time for me to make some calls.
oh.. things happen in three's so the back pain is number 2. I wander what's next? (I'm just a bit superstitious)
thanks again...

Ouch. I did the very same thing a few weeks ago. It hurt like hell but only swelled up a little bit.
Ice it to reduce swelling & use the heating pad on a low setting later on to help the pain (my dr told me that).
Expect your foot to be purple next week. Take care.
