My Mom
Hey all-
My mom called me yesterday. After having a mammogram, her OB office ordered tests for an ultrasound and biopsy to be taken because they were concerned. She had those yesterday and the true results will be in on Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning, but the radiologist said to her that if the reults came back negative then the results were wrong.
Basically he told her what he saw: a 1.5 centimter mass so deep and close to the muscle that they way he detected it was the pulling and seperating in the area. My mom has had a funny feeling for a while now, so says that if it comes back positive that she'll not get a second opinion, but will work with her doctor on a course of treatment. She is very healthy and vert active, and has done everything right with checking monthky and having her mammograms faithfully, so its "just one of those things".
Thing is...I am so scared that she is scared and I am not with her (she's in Colorado). They will operate, but does that mean she has to go through radiation and chemo?! My God those are such scarey words for me right now!! I completely lost it on the way home from dinner last night and cried so hard that my tears matched the rainstorm we got last night (course...I had 2 glasses of wine at dinner and am PMSing...not a real good combo for the emotions!). **Sigh**
So...if you are the praying type, please pray for my mom. Please think positive thoughts or do sun salutations...whatever. I will take all the positive and good healing energy I can.
Thanks for listening all...

Oh Whitney.....*BIG HUGS*......I'm so sorry to hear this news about your Mom. Cancer is such a frightening word. I know I faced that fear a year ago. Thankfully my biopsy wasn't malignent.
Finding a malignancy doesn't always mean chemo and radiation. It depends on if they found anything in the lymph nodes. If all lymph nodes are clear often it is just surgery and they may not remove the entire breast. There are times that a lumpectomy is the treatment of choice. The good news for your Mom is that it sounds as if it was caught very early. So just keep concentrating on that sweetie.
My prayers are heading your way and your Mom's way. Let us know what the results are. Hang in there sweetie, be gentle with yourself, it sounds like it is going to be a long weekend.

Thanks Beth. She mentioned something yesterday about removing the lump, and 2 lymph-nodes now that you mention it. The whole conversation is like a bad dream and comes back at me in bits and pieces. Hopefully it will be just the surgery and recovery and she will be clear.

Oh Whit my dear, Big <<HUGS>>!!
The good news is these things are likely very treatable with early detection and treatment! I am sure your Mom will have a good prognosis...Until they tell you different, you might as well look at the positives...like they found it NOW instead of 5 years from now!! Medicine is improving every day and Cancer doesn't have to be the horrible word it was 10 years ago....keep that in mind sweetie!!
Prayers to you both!!

My Mom's response to your post~
Hi,
It all begins with a tissue report and then that will guide the Dr. your mom should get a 2nd opinion if she wants too. there are so many options and they all are for conserving the breast,
After the tissue report is known then she will be offered several options. removing the lump and getting clear margins plus radiation equals having a mastectomy. if the the tissue report shows a invasive cancer the the lymph nodes need to tested. that will dertermine if she will need chemotherapy and or radiation therapy. I deal will this everyday and I am here to help you and answer any questions you may have. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. how will this effect you??? if this is breast cancer then you will have annual mammograms starting 10 years younger then when you mom is diagnosed====if she is is 50 then you would start at age 40. you must do self breast exams once a month and the best time is a week after your period and getting a clinical exam when you get the pap. let me know and I will help you as I can.. Whit, I am so sorry to hear this. Of course your mom will be in my prayers. Big, loving hugs coming your way my dear friend. I know the pain you are feeling and the thoughts that it is just a bad dream you will wake up from soon. Sweetie, if you need an ear anytime just pm me your phone number. The thought of losing a parent is so scary and I want you to know I totally understand what you are going thru. As you know I lost my mom 5 months ago and am now faced with losing my brother soon. I love you my dear friend and your mom, you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers.

All my thoughts
Wow, Whitney, please give your mom my best--I really enjoyed meeting her when you came through St. Louis.
I went through something similar about ten years ago now, and came through with a clean bill of health. It is traumatic, frightening, and when it's done, a source of strength, if that makes any sense. Your mom will do very well--she's a well of serenity already. Lots of healing and serene thoughts headed your way and hers.

Whitney, your mom is in my prayers.
Life is a test, and the strong survive and flourish. Just remember that the strong can cry and fall apart sometimes. It's your mom. But you will get through this with her.
Hugs to you both,
