Ok my oldest son is in the 5th grade. Next year he will go to middle school an no longer be a part of the dual language Spanish/English program he is thriving in now. He has been in the Companeros program since 1st grade and I would love to continue him at a level of Spanish that is appropriate for him......does anyone know of any immersion programs in the area for kids his age/grade? He is a GATE student and he tests in the 98% for the state in math and english and in all subcatagories. He is also teaching himself sign language from a book and I would love to know of programs available for that also, is there a age requirement for those types of classes in community colleges?

I will be greatful for any information, night classes, tutors, charter schools anything......my web searches just aren't giving the results I had hoped for. I would hate for him to have to take a 2 year break only to start at beginning-Spanish in 8th grade and have all the knowledge he as aquired, his conversation skills and grammer unused for another couple of years.

Thanks in advance

I am not familiar with the SD programs, but am amazed at his interest in being multi lingual (with also taking up signing). It is so rare these days to see kids interested in these types of things and not completely focused on computer games and the like.

Someday he just may work for a consulate or the UN or something else really cool due to his love of languages. Good job, mom!

The communtiy college in my area does have Spanish courses for kids at all levels. So you may want to call and ask. Also, call your sons school and ask if they know of any resources you can use. You could always hire him a private tutor for him for the next few years. I agree that it would be a shame to have him sidelined on his Spanish for 2 years. My kids didn't start until 5th grade and I just started this year. The older you are the harder it is. Let us know what you find out!

I work for the LaMesa-Spring Valley school district. I know that our middle schools offer Spanish as an elective. The students can take Spanish from 6-8 grade...then it's off to high school. Check with your school district, they should be able to give you more information. Good Luck.
