When breeding you have to think about the genetics behind the breed, dna testing, liver shunt testing, STDs, etc. Breeding isn't about putting two dogs together. You need a mentor to help you with delivery and such. Mommas and babies can die from unexperienced breeders.

And the least of the problems, once a male mates, he will be marking all over the house.

Please, no offense, leave the breeding to the professionals.

No offense taken.

Good, thanks. Believe me, I once thought I wanted to breed Baby for puppies. Then I joined a Yorkie forum and learned SO much! When I was a brand new member a girl bred her female. All the puppies died (except one) AND her female died during birth. After reading that, I said no way! I wouldn't want to put my beloved dog at risk. There's so much more to breeding than the mating portion.

But, of course, you will make your own decision. I just encourage you to read up and think before you decide. I'd hate to see you lose your baby. These toy dogs are so fragile.

Yes, I totally agree. They are soooo fragile. We wouldn't ever want to risk the life of our little girl. Or might I say young lady now. Thanks for the advice.

I have 5 chihuahuas, all pets and spayed and neutered. Certainly would never want to risk the life of any of my babies or any future chis. Have you done any health/genetic testing to be sure you don't pass along any problems to the puppies? That's the most important thing to do before breeding. It wouldn't be fair to bring puppies into the world who could later have problems that would effect their health. After all, we all know what it's like to live in pain and it is NOT fun!

make sure the male is much smaller than the female. that helps with not having to have csections on them. when she goes to whelp make sure you are there with her. I use to breed them. I just got rid of my male. he was a tiny little guy. maybe 2.5 lbs.

someone asked about house training? dang they are difficult to train! every one I have ever had was almost impossible. they are sneaky little things.

I agree with the others about not breeding. And I also agree with the others about not being able to train a male. Our Fletch just turned 7. He'll go out when it's warm and sunny, but our NY winters are a big challenge for him and if it's raining or there's a thunderstorm, forget it. Our son just graduated from college. As soon as he gets a job and moves out, he's taking Fletch with him (it's his dog anyway). He doesn't even look like a chihuahua (even though he's AKC registered), but he's cute nevertheless and has a very sweet disposition. But he's also as dumb as a doorknob and poops in the basement and pisses on any plastic bag we might leave on the floor. When we got carpeting for our kids' rooms, he 'christened' each of them--more than once. When we got the kitten (my avatar), he peed on her play gym. The only reason we still have him is because I don't have the heart to give him up. He is a real sweetie otherwise.

As for breeding, nice experience for you, but as others have said it could be a risk to your sweetie and those puppies could one day end up in a rescue. There are so many homeless animals out there nowadays, it sickening (just look at your local classifieds or a local rescue). Please do everyone a favor. Don't breed her. Enjoy her as she is.

I have a tiny 3-pounder 8-year-old little boy. He thinks he is a stud, but he is neutered. He is headstrong and independent. Good luck with the house training. He does well since I am home with him and watch him. We also kennel him when we leave because otherwise he punishes us with a little "present" underneath the end table by my hubby's chair.
