I can relate to many of your stories about being a nurse and the concern of returning to work. In my case, I was in the process of filing for disability due to frequent illness and pain/weakness related to fibromyalgia and the excessive weight gain.

Six weeks after I had the lap roux en y, I had back surgery for a severely herniated L4/L5 disc related to excess weight, years of back problems, and job related. After recovering for about two months with doing my physical therapy and exercising, I went back to work in the ICU.

Let me tell you, it is very difficult to get all your meal breaks in, especially while trying to sit down and make it last for a 1/2 hour meal, but I am still successfully losing weight. I am almost two years out, and I have lost a total of 195# (my partner jokes that it is equal to one adult man or 4 super models!)

If your passion is still in nursing, please hang in there! There are always ways to continue to work, get the proper healing, and get the nutrition you need while at work. If you take the time to heal before returning to work, it will go so much more smoothly and you'll be surprised at how much more energy you have to devote to the patients that need you the most. Take care and be safe!

Eric,

Thanks so much for the encouragement! Wow- You have done well! I will be going back to work sometime in August, I just have to find a job! haha... I'm confident it can be done, so thank you and congrats on your successful loss of 4 supermodels!

I also work in homecare and doing utilization review/quality control stuff (OASIS anyone) so I came back to doing office work in 2 1/2 weeks and started seeing patients again in about 4 weeks.
Knowing how I felt, I have to tell you there was times that I had to take narcs in the middle of the day sitting all that time, so I know if I was still in ED I'd probably have to take more like 4 weeks off. Of course, being a little high might help my toleration for patients.

I am a second year student... Last semester, I had to have a ACL replacement and meniscus repair. I still passed, just barely considering everything Ive been thru.. Now, I am trying to get this done and going to try to get it done over Christmas break. That would give me about three weeks and then clinicals dont start for about another week.. so that would give me four weeks to recover.. What do you guys think? I get to pick my patients that semester too, so I will pick nonlifting, etc...
Another thing, Did you guys catch alot of negativity from all the other nurses about getting the surgery? How did you handle that?

I have asked for 2 weeks off and I sure hope I can handle going back but we shall see, I have also applied for short term disabiility. I work in academics and direct a number of health care programs. Luckily my boss is also ok with having me work at home for a week or two.

So nice to hear from other nurses and/or people in the healthcare field, my Surgeron is great and said how ever much time I feel like I need, I asked for 4 initially and will see how it goes, I'm hoping in 2 weeks I will feel pretty good and then have 2 more weeks to really adjust and get my routine down. My one concern is getting time to have my meals because I know I will need to take my time to eat and unfourtunately like you all know, breaks are NOT easy to come by in the Acute Care setting, so I will have to work with that!
