Hi!
I teach the little ones...Pre-Kindergarten. I tried going back to work after one week but ended up taking two weeks because the doctor said that I was overdoing things. I've been very open about it with my parents and fellow teachers. They've all been very supportive! I told my kids that I had surgery on my tummy to help me feel better. They were all so sweet, made me lots of get well cards while I was out. Such an awesome age! At our school we wear the scrubs like nurses wear so it's kinda hard for anyone to tell that I've lost as much as I have, although I have gotten some compliments on my face slimming down. I have so much more energy that I can really get down with the kiddos more and they love it. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Highschool would be quite a bit different, they can actually understand whats going on if you tell them. :-) You are very right about the rumors that can start...I think I'd recommend being open about it with your students. They'll really respect that you are being honest with them.

Wow, Pre-K!
Hi LaDawn,
Despite some of the things that I know teachers can say, I am one secondary teacher who *really* respects Pre-K teachers! You have to have SO much energy and creativity! Thank you for helping to shape our future kiddoes! And I *completely* agree with scrubs as clothing -- my goodness, I cannot imagine the mess, haha!
I love what you told the kids, just enough for them to understand your sensitive "tummy," yet not the weight loss burden -- so that they don't feel self-conscious if they're heavy. Little kids personalize everything, after all.
Congrats on your surgery and your career...please keep us up to date with your WL journey!

Trying so hard to get back on track, face that I can't do it alone, stop beating myself up for my failings... UPDATE: Well, after the 7 lb. drop last week, this week I didn't lose *anything*. Didn't gain, but it's discouraging.

Hi Jenn!
Thanks for the nice response! You're very sweet! I see we're at the same weight right now...Wow! Great job with your WL journey! Keep up the good work!
I taught Kindergarten for 7 years and loved that too, but, I think Pre-K has definately been my favorite. Ya know, you can just do "no wrong" in their eyes! I just love this age, they're so excited to learn and they think that everything you do with them is fun!
Now I admire you going into Middle School...It takes a special person to work with the kids that age. They try to be so grown up even though they're just "babies" still, and they know all there is to know about everything (at least my daughters friends did). My daughter turns 16 next week, I remember that age quite well. Kudos to you Jenn. TTYS!

Teacher
I am also a teacher. I teach agricultural science and industrial technology courses to 7 - 12 graders in a small school (310 kids k-12). Being in the ag teacher business also means advising a FFA chapter; this will be the first year that I will be able to keep up with my highschoolers at our National Convention in Indianapolis. I am looking forward to it!!
I told them I was having surgery but have not seen any of them over the summer.

I teach high school and have a great support system at work. I told my close co-workers but wasn't sure about whether or not to tell the kids. After several dr appts. they became concerned that something was really wrong with me so I "fessed up." They were all really sweet and caring. I'm glad I told them.

That is so cool that you teach ag! My oldest daughter was in FFA for the past couple of years and went to state for floral design last year, she loved it!
I'm sure your students will be very supportive, mine had a lot of questions and gave me many positive comments. The school I work at isn't as small as yours, but the one I went to 25 years ago was, get ready for lots and lots of attention for a while - most of it will be great! Congratulations, you've done wonderful so far, by convention time you won't just be able to keep up with them, you'll be running circles around them.

I teach 3rd grade. We'll find out next week how many....with Cali's budget in such a wonderful state who knows...we may be wall to wall standing room only. I am trying to figure out how many days I will need a sub and also if I want to "stop in" on the first day for a little while to introduce myself. Haven't figured out what to tell them yet. I like the responses I've seen here, but I think my kids will want a little more info.

That sounds like something I would like to do someday. Actually, if you ever do wind up in the classroom in a school like mine, you will realize that both jobs can be VERY similar. Do you find your job more stressful, more rewarding, or somewhat balanced?

Hi all from another teacher!
I'm heading back to full time teaching in a couple weeks after having been home on leave with my kids the last 4 years. It'll be an interesting new assignment in a small urban school- just over 400 kids K-12. I'll have a multi-age class of third and fourth graders. Should be fun I hope. Justme, I hear where you are coming from. I also feel my job is half social work as most the kids are living in poverty and dealing with all the problems that come with that.
I may end up waiting to schedule surgery for next summer- we'll see how the new school feels as I get started this fall. But, if I take time off during the year, I think with the younger ones I'd just tell them the doctor needs to do surgery on my stomach to make me healthier, or something like that. I'm pretty sure I'd let my principal and the coworkers I work with directly know what was going on.
