Default Teacher and Volunteer EMT

I'll start off in this new category. I've been a teacher for almost 10 years and an EMT (emergency medical technician) for 2 1/2 years. I can tell you that being heavier certainly has an impact on my performance. I get tired SO much easier.

As a teacher I feel the need to sit down a lot more than I used to b/c I get worn out. Not having air conditioning in our building is also killer! I sweat like a pig. My back kills me and I have frequent headaches. I used to be able to take a lot more noise than I used to.

As an EMT, I find that my back hurts more now picking up patients in the stretcher than before. I also sweat more than usual in my jumpsuits.

I can't wait to lose weight!

How heavy are you now? Do you have someone at home to help you with recovery? It's so soon! Are you scared or excited?

I'm 225, but I gained weight SO fast in the past two years. If you check out "Nicole's Story" you can see how thin I was a few years ago. (sigh) I have my cousin, whom I live with, and my mom and dad live in the next town. I should be okay. If not, I'll go over to mom's and dad's and stay in the spare bedroom! Right now I'm excited...but I'm sure I'll be nervous the more the date creeps up!

Thanks for your concern!

I can SO relate to you.
I worked in EMS in Montreal for over 10 years and was a very big boy. My last year as a working EMT I was over 300 pounds. For me it was definitely my back that started to go out on me.

Now I am about 3 weeks post op and am feeling great.

Good luck with your surgery!

I am currently a certified First Responder and work on an ambulance in MT. I have noticed that weight loss has helped so much with running upstairs and lifting patients. But I was amazed at how much harder it was as well. I used my weight for alot of things an EMS was one of them. Just make sure that when you have your surgery you take time of call so that you dont rip anything open. I was out for 3-4 months while I healed up before I started taking calls again.

Wow, 3-4 months? I was told full duty by 6 weeks! Maybe I should re-evaluate at my 1 month post op. Thanks for that info!

Ya no problem. My doctor was not comfortable with me doing it until I was this far out then I also had my EMS director telling me no I was not going back to active duty.

I actually told my president what you said. He said don't worry and I should take what I need to get better. But, at my one month eval (July 30) I'm going to see what my doc says.
