Default My 2 cents

I don't think this has anything to do with the doc, and only wanting "their" people on the forum. It was something that was asked for by a member of the forum. I also don't think that anyone is trying to leave anyone out. At least I hope that's not the case!

I, too, am a little sad about this thread. I was so thankful when I stumbled onto this forum. I've learned to much, felt like I've made internet "friends" from across the country (even across the world) who are in the same boat (or were) as I am. There's always been a wonderful cross section of information. I've even raved about it to numerous dr.'s I've visited along my journey. I considered the posts about your support groups and gatherings private, so I never really went there. I've never felt like an intruder..until now.

As I head into the two weeks before my surgery, I find myself somewhat depressed to see this "rift." I was really counting on the support. Maybe us "outsiders" should come up with a plan B of where to meet up online if this doesn't work out. This is the first time I've ever belonged to a forum, so I don't really know alot about others that are out there. But, I'd hate to lose touch with everybody. I'm open to ideas!

I don't believe that Bridget wanted to leave all of us non Callery people out...I understand exactly what she is asking for. The issue that Eli_far77 brought up was that even if there was a section just for the Callery/Potts patients that other people would still read and post in that section. The only way to make that not happen would be to put some sort of a password on the new Callery/Potts section.

Lisa...don't fret. Bridget isn't trying to get rid of everyone thats not a Callery/Potts patient. She is just asking for a new section on this forum just for those patients. There are a LOT of people on this forum now and she wants to be able to go someplace on the forum to see updates on JUST the Callery/Potts patients...so that they can see meeting times, talk about old times, etc.

I don't think the idea of starting a new section has anything to do with leaving the other sections, not posting and being encouraging to everyone. Most of us enjoy that aspect immensely. Bridget is not the kind of person that would abandon anyone that needs a little help, advice or encouragement. I think what's meant here, is that most of us Callery/Potts kids, not only know each other in person. But meet monthly for support. Plus we like to visit new post-ops in the hospital. A lot of the questions on this forum are not general to just GB. They are specific to Callery/Potts... our insurance, what to expect at the seminars, things like that. If we did have our own section it would be for those reasons... and only those. Lots of times those posts get lost in the mix, because we have so many posts. Does that make sense? I know I'll still be around to answer general questions etc, and I'm sure most everyone else will too.

We aren't asking for a separate forum that's password protected to leave anyone out. Bridget was just suggesting that we have a separate section, like we currently have "Post op" "Pre-op" and "General discussion". I don't know why anyone thinks we have this "us vs.them" sentiment. We like to encourage others and are happy to help where we can.

Dr. Potts and Dr Callery are partners here in California. Dr. C has practiced here for 15 years doing RNY surgery. During that time, his staff have developed a very intensive education program that is quite specific to he needs we have here and how to deal with the insurance companies. Each state has it's own, seperate regulations even though many insurance companies are nationally reconized.

We have to go trough 6 seminars in order to have WLS through them. Having survive them, we like to be able to get together on a section to discuss specifically what Dr. C and Dr. P has instructed. Even with the big binder we get, a lot gets lost because there's so much to learn. Since Dr. Ca and P service a lot of people from several counties, we can't all get together for the group support meetings they have. Dr. P and C have over 2500 patients, so it's impossible to get them all connected. Having a space on tis forum will allow us to keep in touch with the locals. In that section, when we say "look in the blue binder" for any answer, everyone who is a dr.C/P patients knows what that means. Currently, since the topics are allover the forum, when we say "look in the blue binder" a non Callery/Potts paitents goes "huh?'.

In many cases, what other surgeons do many even conflict wih our surgeons do. We don't want to give advice contrary to what your specific doctor does. there are many ways to skin a cat. We can speak to our exoperiences, but i would like to see a place where it's already understand that if you're at stage "X", we are on the same page with others patients that are also stage "X". Dr. C/P also update their education as new info comes out, so we would like to compare amongst ourselves what has changed, are the changes better or more effective than that which was taught the early Dr. C patients.

Now, when someone comes in and posts a question and they're not a Dr. C or Dr. P patiens, we're not going to flame them or kick them out. That person may get redirected to a more appropriate section of the forum to meet their needs.

I hope this clarifys things some.

Default Exactly

Its exactly the point the way Robin, Cin and Marie put it. No passwords, still public info n stuff. But its just a direct subject matter to click on tho get info about us is all. Otherwise you go to Long Term Post Op section or Post Op, etc and have to read through things to find one of your Dr C and Dr P peeps. Like Marie also stated, we can advise them the way we have all been advised giving our particular surgeon, otherwise they get conflicting information. Also, many of you found this website by accident and it has been a blessing, to all of us, but Dr Callery And Dr potts encourage their patients to come here, all the posts, the jokes the updates on people acrossthe globe, the surveys, etc, can be overwhelming to read to a newbie, this was they can stay connected to the people who had the same sugeon.
Thisis so not, us vs them, and if ya wanted to reply to a post in that section it would be cool, Im just trying to simplify it a bit for us. For instance,I could got ot the Dr C Dr P section, and write, Has anyone heard from Sandi or Papa Mike or Christina..... we would know who that is. Or if there is a special support group being put together, we could put it there. etc.

I will still post on the other sections, as I feel I have good info to share, or a good scolding to do, lol You are all my peeps, no matter the geography! I love ya n stuff!

Thumbs up Relax all you folks outside San Diego...

I really appreciate Bridget's idea. Each time I come out here, the list of postings by people outside the area gets longer. I come here to find out what is going on with everyone and where we are meeting. I have been lost lately and it took me a bit of time and reading to find this thread tonight.

I need to be able to attend our local meetings and events and due to my spaciness last month, I missed! And when I miss our face to face meetings, I really feel like I've missed something.

No offense to anyone outside of San Diego, we will still support your efforts and emotions. The best suggestion I can offer is to bond together with others in your area for meetings and activities so that you can really become close with them. We are not snubbing you, speaking for myself, I am still very needy and am at a stall.

See ya'll on the 6th!

I kinda like the idea of a "Callery/Potts" section.......it's true - we get different instructions from Dr. C, Dr. P, and Kelly, and it gets overwhelming and confusion to get different advice from different surgeons. I do know that Kelly is very particular about what we do (and she has the history behind this procedure to warrant that)......sometimes I feel confused by feedback from someone outside Dr. C's practice. Also, sometimes the advice that WE give may be misconstrued by someone outside of Dr. C's practice.

Hold on a cotton picking minute here! We love you all. You don't have to go anywhere. I've learned so much, and gotten so much support from everyone here. I don't want anyone to leave. So, please don't feel like we don't want you here! I think what Bridget is expressing is that for local meetings, etc, it would be nice to have a specific place to post them. That's all, right Bridget???
