How old is too old?
I would love for my aunt to get gastric bypass. My husband had it done a year and a half ago (by Dr. Callery) and is doing great! Aunt Kooks is 50-something (like 53, I think) and has been interested for several years. However, her PCP convinced her that she is too old! I am encouraging her to get a second opinion - she is active for her age and size (size 26/28) and exercises for 20-45 minutes everyday. She has severe edema in her ankles but is otherwise healthy (no high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.) but has family history of degenerative disk disease, cancer and diabetes. I am sure that there were people at my husband's intro seminar in their late 40's, early 50's... Is it worth working to get her a second opinion? Like I said, she is motivated, but if she really is "too old" I don't want to get her hopes up.
Thanks!

Definately get another opionion - you're really not too old until you're in your 70's...

Hi,
I had my surgery this Aug. I'm 54. The surgeon never even brought it up. Plus I had lots of co-morbidities. Your aunt needs a 2nd opinion.

Hi, I just had my surgery Dec. 13 and I turned 57 on Dec 17. She should get a second opinion.

Encourage her to get another opinion. I had mine 2 months before I turned 55. It was the greatest decision I ever made. I truly believe I wouldn't be alive today if I hadn't had it done. This last semester (I work in a high school) has been the most stressful and hard semester I can ever remember having, and if I had gone thru it still being so heavy, I would have had a heart attack. I just know it!! I had the same questions when I went because I kept seeing all these younger people, but met some my age and older at Dr. Callery's informational meetings.

My neighbor's mother had the surgery this month and she was 60. She was having a hard time carrying around all her weight. She felt great after surgery and has been doing well. I defintly think it would be harder for someone to loose weight when they are older. They should be good candidates unless they have medical problems that keep them from the surgery.

53 y o
I had my surgery Dec 7 and I am 53 y.o. A person my age can expect another 30 or so yrs life expectancy and GBP will greatly improve quality of life! But your aunt has to want to do it and be willing and able to commit to all the lifestyle changes. Just because your husband had it doesn't NECESSARILY mean your aunt is a good candidate. Each of us is a unique and individual case. But her age should not be an impediment. Seek another opinion for sure!
