Most surgeons use the cut off of 65 The older patients have a higher mortality rate. The benefits are also less because the idea is to get the long term health benefits of low cholesterol, weight, diabetes etc. to be worth the risk of the surgery. A healthy 50's is well in the realm of being worth it!!!

Second opinion for sure! I asked my doc about it because of my Gram (she is 70) and he said he will do and has done wls in patients as old as 65.

Default I'm 52

Get another opinion ! I feel more energetic and less of a " old woman" since I had the surgery in Sept. I have lost 50 pounds so far and can feel it. As a matter of fact so can hubby LOL He keeps patting my butt and says he can feel it getting smaller....

Default Go for it!

I recently had GBP surgery one month before turning 53. One thing for sure is that for the first time in my life I feel as if I am a little older than I my brain tells me. You Aunt should be made aware of the recovery time.

Convincing my PCP took a little work on my part too. I began discussing the idea of WLS at least a year before I actually took the plunge. One of the most powerful tools I used +was to attend the initial education seminar at Dr. Callery/Pott's office. After I did this I went back to my PCP and told her: I have heard all about the surgery, I recognize the risks and the benefits and for me the benefits outweigh the risks. I have spent a lot of time thinking about it and would like to have the referral for a consult. The walls crumbled down. Here I am, close to 5 weeks post-op.

Your aunt has to make her own choices, however, and everyone has a limit. Maybe she simply does not want to go through major surgery. I can under-stand that. For a long time I had decided that I was fat and that was my choice. I had decided that the choice may shorten my life span but I was doing what I chose. Like your aunt, I also exercised regularly. For me, injuring my achilles tendon was the final straw. I could no longer walk daily and then the aches and pains piled on. Have her think about that also.

Its the quality of life that I think is improved by the surgery. Good luck.

My doctor doesn't perform surgeries for men over 40 and women over 50. You must have a BMI of 40 to 55. But that is just him. There are lots of doctors out there who perform on all types and sizes so definately find another doctor.

Default how old it too old?

Dr Callery was wonderful.. Kelly led the way with my inital exam.
Then my Doctor did the physical and I was on my way.
Oh. How old is too old..
I am 62... and as Kelly put it "You're not a kid anymore"
My response was, "No Sh--!"
I finally taking walks every two three hours and getting my
strength back.
It is really worth it.. when I walk my body seems lighter.
Minus 36 lbs since the start of the process.
I am back to work tomorrow.. part time..

The support group I attended last week was led by a surgeon who said that he is running into many people in their 60's and 70's who are having the surgery done.

Health related problems seem to be more of a concern than age for the surgery. :-)
