My husband is going to have his surgery next month and I am really scared. I am scared that something will happen to him, even though I know that this is his last chance to have a "normal" life. I am also considered medically obese, but have more energy than he does. I am scared about what this means for me after the surgery.
I am trying to see this as a great opportunity for the both of us to get more active and lose weight, since I will try to follow what he does to the best of my ability. I am having a bit of anxiety and, if I am honest with myself, a bit jealous that it will be "easy" for him to lose the weight. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. |

Welcome and congratulations to your husband on his up and coming surgery.
Firstly, you need to know that surgery is NOT an easy option. This is a common misconception. Your husband will be given a tool to help him but he will still have to work hard to modify his eating habits and make wise choices if his surgery is to be successful. I can understand that you are anxious about yourself but you are right. This is an ideal opportunity for you to make some changes in your eating habits and lifestyle too. I hope he won't mind me mentioning this but I know that Mike's (fisher100) wife has done remarkably well in keeping to her diet since his surgery. Hopefully he'll see this thread and chime in.

What a lucky guy to have a wife like you! He will be more successful and you will be healthier too - win/win situation. I can understand your fears, but just the fact that you are thinking about all of this shows that you will be more prepared.

Agree with both Corrine & Tracy.. ..
My fiancé lost a lot of weight before I met him (over 100 lbs).. but over the course of the last three or four years, had started to gain a bit back... my WL journey seems to have spurred him on to getting those lbs he's regained back off and to get into better shape. By posting here, you're showing your willingness to share in your DH's journey and you both can make the changes needed to get healthier together.. a total win/win! Good luck.. hopefully you and your DH will find the information and support here a valuable resource in both of your journeys.

After I had the surgery my DH followed what I was eating and has lost just about as much as me plus he wasn't that big to begin with. I got a fine looking hubby out of it.

I want to thank you all for your help and well wishes.
I have questions about what kind of post-op care will my DH need? What kind of effect will the surgery have on his behaviors, moods, etc? Thanks in advance for all your help! |

Hi,
Just wanted to say how supportive you must be as a wife, I take my hat off to you. I am due to have a bypass in the summer (not sure of date yet) and my husband, pretty much, sounds the same as you, he is scared of the effect it will have on our social life, also will I be on his case to lose weight with me (he is also obese), he is worried about the risks of surgery, will I develop blood clots (I have a history of them) also if I am an emotional eater...what will I turn to if food is no longer an option for me? I am due to have my final test with a pyschiatric profiler on 21st May, dont think it would be wise of me to voice these feelings to the profiler as this could jeopadise my surgery. Perhaps there is a site for partners/spouses of patients who have wls? Wouldnt be a bad idea to set one up. Best wishes to you for being such a Honey Cheryl xx |
