I eat pasta and rice....but very rarely and very little. You will find it fills you up ridiculously!!! I eat one of those smart ones Spicy Szechuan Noodles or one of the Santa Fe Rice and Beans....and it's like I just had Thanksgiving dinner. Early on I didn't try rice or pasta...it was many many months down the road. I was satisfied w/pintos and cheese from taco bell....hmmmm. I do love the carbs...goldfish crackers are my downfall. I think you'll find you won't crave the pasta/rice much once you try it and see how gross it makes you feel..... Good luck!

When I first moved to solid foods I had to be really careful about what I ate, especially when eating out. I tended to stick to grilled shrimp or chicken and steamed veggies because I knew they wouldn't make me sick. I also would do refried beans and a pollo asado taco if I had mexican and just eat the stuff out of the taco not the tortilla. I kind of stayed away from Chinese, just because I find it to be really greasy and I had and continue to have issues with really greasy food, but I would order hot and sour soup.

Both pasta and rice will probably be hard to eat for awhile. Especially rice and spaghetti type noodles. They are really hard to chew properly and rice especially seemed to expand in my pouch and make me uncomfortable.

I would hold off until you are a little further out and then start adding maybe a 1/4 or an 1/8 of a cup of rice to your stir-fry or whatever you are eating. I eat brown rice a couple of times a week but I find that any more that 1/4 makes me uncomfortable.

Default Eating Out ...

I'm only 6 weeks out from surgery, so I don't have too much to offer here ...
but I have learned a few things from eating out.

1. Know where you're going and what's on the menu. Sitting down at a table only to discover that there is nothing on that darn menu you can eat is the pits. Plan ahead.

2. If you have your heart set on something like seafood or chinese or whatever ... I strongly reccomend you try it at home FIRST! You don't want to get sick or 'dump' away from home if you can avoid it.

3. If you go out to eat on a whim and aren't sure what to order, try asking for items that aren't on the menu. Especially places that serve breakfast are more than happy to serve you a small bowl of cottage cheese, or make you a scrambled egg at any time of the day (or evening). And they only charge a couple of bucks.

Just try to stick to what you already know your pouch can handle.

Hope this helped a little ...

Wholegrain pasta and brown rice is a better option but in honesty, I'd recommend you really limit the stuff.

I was cleared at 4 weeks to have pasta and rice but it was explained to me that at that stage, protein had to come first followed by well cooked vegetables.

You are at a vital stage in your WLS programme. This is where you are laying down the foundation for your future eating habits and to start eating much in the way of rice and pasta now makes it harder to limit it down the road when you're able to eat a bigger amount of food.

I'm glad I followed that advice - rice and pasta has always been a passion for me and it would have been easy to load up on it at the expense of the protein.

I fool my kids by using whole wheat pasta....

and reduced fat milk and cheeses. Or even non fat

They never know the difference.

I even used skim milk, thickened with non fat milk powder, for their cereal...they didnt notice

I tried the Barilla Plus pasta. It's great. Tastes a lot better than the whole wheat pasta I get at Trader Joe's. Rice... IT HURTS!!
Stick to your protein now... worry about pasta later.
