Default My wife starts her pre-op diet tomorrow - I need ideas

Greetings all! I'm so glad that we have found this forum. It looks like there is a great group of people here and it's great to be able to speak to be people who are going to experience what we are going to experience as well.

My wife (BrightySLC) is scheduled to have her gastric bypass Monday, March 24th and she is starting her liquid pre-op diet tomorrow.

I want to be as supportive as possible and could stand to lose a bit of weight myself. I am 6'4" and about 265 pounds. It's just the two of us, so we don't have to worry about cooking for children or anything like that. What have other spouses done for meals to help support and not discourage her.

I've quickly skimmed a couple of areas for an answer to this, but I haven't seen anything. Any ideas would be great and greatly appreciated.

Hey Tom - great of you to be so supportive to your sweetie

First - clear out the stuff from the house that would be a temptations like munchies and sweet stuff. Stock up on the broths and the things she can have. She may get a little cranky - just love her through it and don't take it personally.

Best of luck to you both - she will be a success with the support you are offering her...

Tom, longtime success for the both of you will depend largely on getting in good proteins. Once she passes her liquid and puree phases, eat plenty of chicken, fish and shellfish, and lean red meats with her. My wife has lost 10 pounds since I had surgery just from the change in foods that I've made, it can work for you as well.

Best wishes for her surgery, sounds like she has a good man behind her.

Default WOW! Great to see such a supportive husband!

Have you also had a chance to go to any meetings with dietician or doctor with her? If, so you have probably picked up a few tips on eating healthy in general ... and simply follow them. Be sure that you are not eating pizza, pasta drenched in rich sauces, fried foods, or any of her favorite off limits foods. And DON'T come home smelling like McDonald's or anything else like that...
I'm sure that you will do fine though, because you sound like you are really wanting to help out!
Congrats! and Good luck!

A great big thank you to everybody! We're in this for the long haul and I just want to make sure that she knows that I support everything.

We're going to get rid of everything that is tempting and bad for us. Don't worry - we won't just be throwing it out - it will either be donated to food banks or other groups in need.

I think I'll have to start trying to get creative with my meals and help suport as I can. I think that removing temptation is the biggest part and will help a lot. I've tried to talk her into letting me do the liquid diet this week with her, but she has refused saying that she doesn't need the both of us cranky this week. Fair enough.

I'm so excited for her and I just want her to be happy. I know this is going to be hard, but I want to make it as easy I can for her.

I do worry a bit about attaching guilt with eating for myself. I know that's a dangerous road to start down and I need to be careful of that. I think I'll be okay as I long as I make a lot of the positive changes that I need to. I've needed to them for a while now, so this is a great reason to start.

Early out after surgery, I couldn't eat with my husband and daughter. I just went to the livingroom and ate. It was mostly for me, the smells and all. I would have been even more bothered if they couldn't eat regular food. Key thing is the pace of eating and making good choices and going very very slow. There are still times now, that I have issues watching others eat high volumes of food, but those are my issues.

Keep busy doing other things before surgery....Food will be a full time job the weeks following surgery.

Best to you both!

Default This is going to be rough

I think we're in for a tough time here. This is going to be rough. I want to do it with her to help support her. I think she's very frustrated because nobody else that she has spoken to has required a full week of liquid diet.

We went shopping yesterday to get all of our vitamins and proteins that were recommended to us. We also stocked up on sugar-free popcicles, a variety of broths and lots of sugar free jello.

I know she just has a lot on her mind but she's having problems sleeping now. I think that things could get better today as you start to remove yourself from it, but I'm sure this week will have it's ups and downs.

I'm trying to do everything I can for her, but this is going to be difficult. I really think she's having a hard time understanding why some people have such shorter fasting periods. It's hard when her surgery buddy is able to just about eat right up to her actual surgery day.

I think the pre op liquid diet varies from doc to doc. Just reassure her that it will all be worth it for the end result. My husband had to reaffirm this to me many times. Good luck to the both of you.
