Angry I really need some help/advice

Hi everyone - I really need some help/advice. My very dear friend had Gastric Bypass on the 7th of January. The surgery went well and she was sent home 3 days later. The day after she came home the ambulance came to pick her up. She was having severe stomach pain. Upon arriving at the hospital she underwent another surgery to drain fluid. The surgeon says she "had a leak" but they were unable to find it. She's been in the hospital ever since. I have to admit her surgeon doesn't inspire much confidence. To be honest I was quite shocked he was willing to perform this procedure, as she wasn't that big and has had some health issues in the past. She's unable to swallow anything (including her own saliva) for another 3 weeks. No food at all for 10 weeks. She's been running a constant fever (101+) and is overcome with numerous infections. She can barely breath. They're worried her lungs will collapse. Today she started heaving. She physically cannot function. On top of this she's suffering from depression. I truthfully worry we may lose her.
I know this may sound like an "ignorant" question, but is this common? I've been pleading w/her to see another doctor, because this one simply isn't cutting it. I'm going to encourage her to visit this site and possibly reach out to others who haven't had the smoothest post op. Please tell me there is someone out there who has experienced something like this and are fully functional today to tell their story?

Leaks are not common although if not caught in time enough and treated quickly people can die from peritonitis. It is a very scary thing. I know my doctor said it can happen in 1-2% of patients. It is a scary thing. I hope she is still hospitalized as she needs to be monitored closely.

I wish you and her all the best and send tons of prayers.

Jessica

Hello Megs,

Whereabouts is your friend located, ie. UK, US? Try to get the medical records transferred to another doctor for a second opinion as you are not convinced by her doctor. Being drastic, is there anyone who has a power of attorney for her, meaning to be able to take decisions on her behalf should she not be up to it? Does she have medical insurance? I'm not familiar with US practice, but could she obtain a second opinion through the recommendation of the med ins? Are you in a position to "take over" practicalities for her, ie. home, keeping an eye on things to reduce her anxieties? Can you sit with her (bring a book) to give her strength through your reassuring companionship?
Hopefully some TTF Members with medical background can help you and her. I have just received today my copy of "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" which may be of help to you/her.

Best wishes in your pursuit of improved health!
Cheers!
Vim

Just want to say that I'm thinking of you and your friend at this time. My recovery has been uneventful, but I have heard of people that had experienced complications and were hopitalized for a month or so. But don't really know the exact history/issues.

Never hurts to get a second opinion!! She's lucky to have a friend like you on her side...she'll be needing you!
