The Depo shot and my experience...

Okay take this advice from someone who has been there and who is going through this and the serious side effects that it has on your body! This is an extremely personal blog from me, this isn’t a forward or something that I received in an email. This is my actual experience! So with that being said, here is my story.
I decided after I had my oldest son that I wanted to wait to have another child, not to long but long enough to raise him and enjoy him as a baby, so I went to the doctors and asked to be put on birth control, since I did get pregnant with my son being on the pill, the doctor referred the depo shot to me. I was on it for 2 1/2 years and decided it was time for me to try and have another baby.. It took a year for the depo to get out of my system and had no problems with it.. a little weight gain but nothing major and it took a little longer for me to get pregnant with my daughter but I did. Again I decided to get on the depo shot again and do the same thing with my youngest son.. same things except it didn’t take no time to get pregnant.. After I had my youngest and my last.. I decided not to have anymore children and got back on the depo shot..
During this last and final time is when my problems began..
1. While on the shot, I didn’t have a cycle, which alot of women wouldn’t complain about but you have to release it somewhere and somehow.. that wasn’t happening for me..
2. My hair which is too my butt, started to thin and fall out.
3. I was having serious mood swings, uncontrolable at times.
4. Headaches wow.. I can’t even begin to describe them.
5. Hot flashes.. I’m only 30 * at the time * I shouldn’t be having this.. I went to the doctors to have a pre-menapausal test done, that was negative.
So with all this being said, I stopped the shot all together in Aug. 2005, then when Feb of 2006 came.. I still had no cycle, no sign of it, nothing.. I went to my OB/Gyn and he gave me a complete physical, of course a pregnancy test, a thyroid test.. everything under the sun.. and it all came back negative.. sounds good huh? No it doesn’t end up with flowers and candy.. So he gives me two pills to take to make my cycle start.. it works.. everything is great!! NOT!!
The morning of May 5th is a day that changed my life forever.. I woke up and my foot was itching.. wow I got bit by a bug or something.. went back to sleep.. woke up again.. too intense burning.. still another sign of a bug bite right? Went back to sleep then woke up in intense pain.. I got up and fell.. I couldn’t apply any pressure to my foot what so ever, it felt like I had fractured it or something.. So the first thing I decided to do was to soak it in a hot bath.. While soaking my foot was changing colors before my eyes.. my foot which should have been red was actually white!! No color what so ever.. I freaked out and went to the E.R. by the time I got there which is about a 20 minute drive if that.. I was having severe pain and my foot was as purple as this font.. No kidding!! It looked like I was wearing a purple sock.. As soon as the nurse saw me.. she took a doppler to my foot and couldn’t get a pulse.. then I went back into a room.. Three doctors came in.. The first couldn’t explain what happened to me, he went and got another doctor.. she came in and couldn’t explain it either.. finally the third doctor came in and he admitted me without question.. Still not knowing what is going on and very afraid.. I get up into my room and lots and lots of test where ran on me.. I had an ekg done, that came back negative, I had an MRI done, that also negative, I had an ultrasound on my blood vessels.. everything seemed to be okay, so I thought. After my third day being at my local hospital, another doctor came in and told me I was being transferred by ambulance to Greenville which is about an hour and a half away from home.. That really scared me.. That is so far.. what about my babies?? What am I going to do, what’s happening to me. All this is going through my head.. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?????
I arrive at Pitt.. Where I am greeted by a wonderful staff.. Still not really knowing what is going on, the doctor came in and told me to prepare to have a CT done, he believed that I had blood clots but he wasn’t sure where they where coming from and why...
I have the CT done and the news comes back that I have a pulmanary embolism in my aorta, which was causing blood clots to go to my foot!! Why?? I have no medical history of this, there is not any medical history in my family.. why is this happening??
Well the doctor scheduled me for surgery and I went in.. I had to incisions in my groin area.. which was completely uncomfortable and that mess hurt! I had 12 staples on each side
I was in alot of pain.. He tried three different size balloons to break up the embolism and it wouldn’t budge.. nothing happened.. he went down into my foot to break up the blood clot that was blocking blood from passing through which was causing me to lose pulse and discolor.. But however it still isn’t a bunch of roses.. I still have problems.. I am on warfin which is a blood thinner and right now I am going to be on it for another year at least.. I have to go get my blood taken at least once a week to make sure it isn’t to thin ( I can bleed to death ) or to thick ( I can clot up more ) when I went back for a follow-up appointment, the warfin is working .. it has shrank my embolism some.. not alot but he could tell a slight difference. Basically what this all boils down to.. the only thing that the doctors and nurses could concur on was me being on the depo shot..
Most of you I am sure have noticed the commercial for the patch about the symptoms and side effects.. I have everyone of those except for death and stroke.. So far.. It is still very possible because when I was admitted I was close to death!! So ladies please beware and men who know women who are on birth control please pass this information on! This almost killed me.. and it could be affecting you or your loved one’s as well and they might not even know it.. I know I didn’t!!
