My 1st WLS Birthday - EDITED WITH LANTERN FEST PHOTOS!

Today is my birthday and I saved a very special treat to enjoy on this special day….

I ordered a sampler pack off of Groupon and have been trying out the flavors.  They are not very dense, which is a nice change from the Premiere Protein ones I have.  As a birthday present to myself I did my measurements and since surgery I have lost 28”.  Folks that is 2 1/3 foot less of me in this world!  Overall I am closing in on the 70lb loss and – even more exciting – soon to enter into two-town.

My next goal after cracking into 299 is the mythical 287.  I have miscellaneous medical records that I went through in preparation for making my weight loss spreadsheet and was able to track weights all the way back to 2003, which also corresponded to my heaviest weight at 379.  My lowest recorded weight for that entire time period was 287 and it was in 2012.  So in at least 14 years I know I have not weighed less than 287.

From there, when I hit 270 it will be my 100lb loss celebration – which I have recently celebrated with Trish (huzzah @Trish1967) and will soon celebrate with Mark (you got this @Dtrain84!).  It may be early to plan these milestones out so far in advance but I like having the mini-goals.  4.1 lbs to Two Town, 17 lbs until lowest weight and 34 lbs until the 100lb loss milestone.  I’m a happy camper.  I’ve been buying canned food for the food pantry to represent every pound lost and that pile makes me happy. :D  I will probably donate the 100lbs and start again otherwise it’s going to take over my living room!

My celebration today is to drive up to the Poconos for a Japanese Lantern Festival.  It’s something I have wanted to do for a while and the fact that this one fell on my birthday made it an obvious choice.  We are supposed to have a gorgeous night for lighting the lanterns and letting them sail into the sky.  You can write anything you want on the lanterns and a 66lb and 28” loss is certain something that I am exciting to send up. Those inches and pounds are gone and they aren’t welcome back.

Congrats on the great progress - and I like your minigoals!  I've been kind of doing that myself. I managed to lose a lot of weight on my own a few years ago, then gained it all back.  This time around I've been sort of mentally tagging the weights I remember from back then. 313 was my first one, then 299 (I have a picture of my doctor's office scale reading 299 from back then).  The lowest weight I reached then was 270, so that's my next minigoal.

You'll have to tell us how the "birthday cake" tastes!

Birthday cake is my least favorite Oh Yeah! One bar, but it's incredibly popular, so I suppose it must be me...

I like your mini-goals, too. When I started, someone suggested making a spreadsheet with milestones at every -5%, which I did. It's been nice to tick those off as I hit them! The canned food is so very tangible, though - a great visual aid.

You're on the outskirts of Two Town now! Hooray!

I love everything about this!!! I love ONE bars, but not the birthday cake ones (Maple, Lemon, and Almond Bliss are my faves), so feel free to switch if you're disappointed in your first bite.

Your minigoals are great. I think you'll fly through them and need new ones soon. What a great "problem" to have!

Your food bank idea is beautiful!

Happy, happy birthday to you!

One bars are my favorites, but I like Cinnamon Bun and Almond Bliss best. I would definitely give them a shot if you eat bars.

To be fair, I don't really like REAL birthday cake, so it might be a stretch to think I might like the bar flavored like it...

@Gretta Save me a lemon one. That sounds like one I'd like.

Updated with two photos from Lantern Fest last night -- absolutely amazing!  If you have a lanternfest near you -- check it out!  You will not regret it at all!

Thanks for the support @tracyringo, @Jen581791, @kayak19, @Gretta and @Kio!

I have to say that the Birthday Cake has also been my least favorite.  I was never a big fan of birthday cake but this really didn't taste like it at all.  The sampler pack came with some I have liked (Lemon Cake, Cinnamon Roll, Maple Glazed, Almond Bliss, Blueberry Cobbler, White Chocolate Raspberry), and others I haven't (Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Birthday Cake, Peanut Butter Pie, Cookies & Creme, Chocolate Brownie).

I LOVE the mini goals!! I have (had) several through this journey. My first was to hit 309, because that's the lowest I've been able to get to on my own since reaching my highest recorded weight of 348. Next was, of course, two-terville. After that it was 288, because that is what I weighed for 5 straight years when I was working. The next was 236.6' of course, my 100lb mark :D. I only have 2 more. One-derland, and goal weight of 175. I think the mini goals are great, because they keep us focused on something attainable over the more "short term". Achievable goals that we can reach more quickly...and keep us encouraged.

I love that you're buying food for the food pantry!! I think that's an awesome way to celebrate your losses...but wow, that is going to be a lot of cans!! AND, it will fill a lot of tummies ❤️

What a beautiful way to celebrate your birthday!! I like the symbol of sending those lost pounds and inches away forever. How freeing!! You're doing an awesome job, and can't wait to celebrate your 100lb loss with you!! Happy birthday!!

Lovely photos, @CurvyMermaid! The symbolic send-off of the pounds and inches is inspiring :) and the lanterns look beautiful. I hope you had a very happy birthday, despite the less than delicious Birthday Cake bar. I guess you can't have your cake and enjoy it, too.

@Gretta I love those reviews - I may not agree with the flavor ranking, but I enjoyed the humor. Now time to figure out how to get those things over here on the other side of the world... No free Amazon Prime shipping here, unfortunately!

Can your GNC order them for you?

Something to look into. They said they could order different flavors of Quest, so maybe... I'm just mentally resigned to not getting familiar stuff I want here, which is a reaction to having less stuff available here than in Dubai, but I should probably get on it and check. Good thinking, Gretta.

Curvy Mermaid, before you lose the 100#, make sure you take a pic of the can pile in your living room.  We'd love to see it and use it as an inspiration for us all! I haven't gotten scheduled yet, but will do this when I start my weight loss.  I have a file on my computer that i am saving ideas/tips/pics/recipies, so I'd love to put your can pile pic in my inspiration folder!

Also what is the lantern festival like? We are in NJ, and go to the Poconos about once a year and that sounds cool!

@Jen581791 I was on the GNC website today and used their chat function to try and find out which Oh Yeah bars they had individually for sale (rather than the whole box).  The person who I was chatting with said he didn't know the store inventory but could place any order directly with him and at a 15% discount.  I'm not sure if this is usual or was because he couldn't answer my question but it might be worthwhile for you to go online first and see if you can get a discount!

@CJireh  Great idea! I'll be sure to take a photo before I take it to the food bank.  I've mostly purchased canned meat or peanut butter although there are some grains and beans in there from when I cleaned out my closet post-surgery.  Having volunteered at the food bank for a few years, I know that they are mostly in need of the protein rather than canned veggies or cranberry sauce (NO ONE wants the cranberry sauce in their cabinets and we always have too much - even if we made Thanksgiving dinner in the soup kitchen every week!).  Yes, definitely check out the Lantern Fest - here is a link for the group that organized mine but I am sure there are others:  http://www.sacklunchproductions.com/
