COUNTDOWN TO SURGERY

GRANDMA

IT HAS BEEN A WHILE SINCE I HAD AN ENTRY. AS I LOOK BACK, I REALIZE THAT THE ONES I HAVE ENTERED ARE NOT TOO UPLIFTING, TO SAY THE LEAST. AS LEAST I WILL BE CONSISTANT WITH THIS ENTRY.

I HAD MY ENDOSCOPY AS THE DOCTOR REQUIRED. ACTUALLY, IT WAS A GOOD THING SINCE A FEW ISSUES WERE FOUND. I ALSO WENT FOR MY PRE-OP BLOOD WORK. WHEN THE RECEPTION SAW THE 4 PAGES OF TESTS REQUESTED AND THE TECH SAW THE 7 VILES OF BLOOD NEEDED, THE LOOKS ON THEIR FACES WERE PRICELESS.

JUMP AHEAD.........

THIS WEEK I WENT FOR MY PRE-OP MEDICATION, TEST AND LAB REVIEW WITH THE NURSE PRACTITIONER. DUE TO THE IMPENDING HURRICANE WHERE I LIVE, I WAS CALLED IN THE MORNING TO SEE IF I COULD MOVE MY APPOINTMENT TO THAT DAY IN THE AFTERNOON. NO PROBLEM (EXCEPT THAT MY "ADVOCATE" DID NOT TELL ME WHEN). ANYWAY, MY  HUSBAND AND I GET TO THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE AND LOW AND BEHOLD, MY ADVOCATE DID NOT NOTIFY ANYONE I WAS COMING. I FOUND OUT SOME INTERESTING THINGS WHILE THERE.

DURING MY ENDOSCOPY, THE DOCTOR REMOVED SEVERAL POLYPS FROM MY STOMACH. I DID NOT NOW THEY COULD GROW BACK. I DID KNOW, IN GENERAL, THAT POLYPS COULD TURN TO CANCER WHEN NOT DEALT WITH.THE THREE OF US DISCUSSED THE PROCEDURE I WAS SCHEDULED FOR. THERE IS A CONCERN FOR THE SLEEVE BECAUSE OF MY GERD AND OTHER ISSUES. GERD CAN BECOME WORSE WITH THE SLEEVE AND THEN REQUIRE GETTING THE BYPASS. IF I GET THE BYPASS, THEY WON'T BE ABLE TO DO AN ENDOSCOPE TO MONITOR FOR POLYPS (AND POSSIBLE FUTURE CANCERS). AND....THE BAD GERD CAN ALSO LEAD TO ESOPHIGAL CANCER IF LEFT ALONE.

I ACTUALLY SAT DOWN TO MAKE A PRO/CON LIST OF WHAT TO DO. I AM LEANING TOWARDS THE SLEEVE SINCE EVERYTHING CAN BE MONITORED. I HOPE FOR THE BEST THAT WE WILL FIND THE BEST MEDS IF I NEED THEM FOR GERD. I WILL SPEAK WITH THE SURGEON FURTHER DURING OUR PRE-OP VISIT.

SPEAKING OF PRE-OP, I STARTED MY 2 WEEK PRE-OP LIQUID DIET TODAY. I THINK IT WILL TAKE A COUPLE OF DAYS TO GET USED TO THE SCHEDULE OF WHAT TO DO WHEN. BUT I'LL DO IT. I AM VERY EXCITED ABOUT THE SURGERY AND I AM WILLING TO DO ALL I NEED TO TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

I would imagine that surgeon will  come up with an appropriate game plan for you. He will take everything into consideration and steer you in the best direction for your long-term health. This isn't their first rodeo and they must have encounter this type of concern before.  I see you are going to a hospital and not an outpatient clinic so you should be in very good and skilled hands.

Best of luck to you on your pre-op diet. You're so close! Just a little longer and you will be on the road to healing.

Take care and be careful with that nasty stormy weather.
