I shared my secret
Posted 10-07-2007 at 08:42 AM by Eseret
Last week at work my boss asked me why I was eating very little for my break and lunch. Another co-worker I've known for 7 years asked me if I was feeling well as she said I looked droopy and tired. And then another co-worker in a different setting asked if I was staving myself to lose the weight. No one knew I had GBS, they only knew of my hiatal hernia surgery.
During lunch that day, while we were all sitting around a table, I decided to spill the beans. I told them that yes, I do eat small meals six times a day, and I am recovering from surgery for the hernia.....but, I also had GPS. My one long time co-worker said, "I knew it!" Others seemed confused so we had a long talk and they seemed relieved that I was okay and wasn't starving myself. I felt relieved myself as it felt like an enormous weight had been lifted from my soul. I left work happier and managed to clean 2 rooms in my house completely after work.
Now, nothing is said about the small amounts I eat.

You're cool...you rule!I'm very happy and proud of you. I wasn't going to tell anyone either, but as it got closer, I decided I was very proud of what I was doing and started telling people. Everyone was really supportive. It sounds like you have a great bunch of co-workers who were worried about you and will be very supportive. That's really great!
Congratulations, -Mike- |

I am pre-op and do not want people to know I am getting GBS. Is there anyone out there who has kept the secret. What did you tell the people around you? When you got a note from your doctor for work did he put down GBS or does he have to say? Like can he say medical condition?
Thanks Sayraw |

Sayraw,
My surgery was in the summer and I work for the school district. I was almost 6 weeks post op by the time the school year began in September so I did not need a note from the doctor to return to work. I'm sure doctors are willing to work with patients so their return to work doesn't involve revealing the reason for surgery. |

Eseret,
I appreciate your response , I am pre-op and I am just very curious. I am having GP and am not sure what to expect. I am in a six week life change program and it is not real informative yet. They are discussing why we over eat etc. I heard you get to eat only 3 ounces of food after several weeks of liquids and have to slowly eat like over 45 minutes and have to chew your food 25 times? But I have not talked to any post-op folks. so again thanks Sayraw |
