Default Pre-op Diets

I have seen here that the pre-op diet for the RNY varies greatly from one dr to the other. My Dr seems to be quite strict. My BMI has just fallen under 35 now 9 days into the pre-op 14 day liquid diet and surgery is this Wed.

Would one last meal with my family jeopardize my surgery?

Thank you for your thoughts,

Default Exceptions to the pre op diet

Pre Op weight loss reduces the amount of fat in the liver, makes the surgery technically easier and often safer, decreases excess water weight by limiting salt intake, often improves respiratory function, may help decrease blood pressure, improves exercise tolerance, and can improve diabetic control. With sufficient weight loss, medications may often be reduced or eliminated.

So there are lots of good reasons to lose weight before surgery.

Practical answer:

A reasonably sized meal that's not loaded with salt a couple of days before surgery probably isn't going to make much of a difference. On the day before surgery it's best to eat light; stick to a 800-1000 calorie intake.

Tough love answer:

Why not celebrate your success so far by doing something else that you enjoy. Celebrate with a hike or go to the lake or a beach, visit to a zoo or museum, take time with relatives just chatting or doing something other than eating you all like to do, have a romantic evening. Your key to lasting weight control will be to lead a less food centric life. Healthy food is essential for a healthy body, and a healthy body goes a big way to having a healthy mind and spirit.

Your question sounds a lot like asking for permission to do something that you know isn't in your best interest. It might be form of bargaining. Be careful as you move forward not to talk yourself into things which aren't best for you.

Good luck.

Thank you Dr.,

I decided against it. You're absolutely right, there are other things I can focus on to do with my kids before I am sore and unable for a bit after surgery that doesn't include food. Just seems all growing up and even now, my parents, sisters etc along with my husband, children and I have used food to celebrate and socialize.

I bought tickets for a play tomorrow because my kids have off school and we will do that for a fun pre-surgery activity.

My only issue is that I am very hungry still. My Dr says that is a result of being vegetarian and not having the added substance of milk in my protein shakes. I use water.
I am surely looking forward to post surgery and not feeling (and hearing) the grumbling stomach!

Thank you!
Toina
