Sleeve gastrectomy is a newer baritric operation that has generated real interest around the world. It consists of excising the lateral 90% of the stomach leaving a narrow tube of stomach along the lesser curvature. The operation is restrictive. Much of the appetite stimulating hormone Gherlin is produced in the lateral stomach. So when that part is excised, the amount of Gherlin decreases and appetite falls.
Sleeve gastrectomy is still under development. The following link directs you to the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery position on the operation. As you will see, as of 10/20/09, the ASMBS is reevaluating it's formal position in light of newer research.

Since sleeve gastrectomy is still undergoing evaluation, and since most insurance companies do not yet cover it, we are not currently performing the procedure routinely. We would consider it if circumstances made gastric bypass or adjustable gastric banding inadvisable.
