First of all, why do we need to stop taking BC pills before the surgery? Second, when can we resume them?

Hormonal therapy such as birth control pills and hormonal replacement therapy can increase the risk of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Therefore most surgeons recommend that these medications be stopped around the time of surgery.

The timing for cessation has not been well studied. Many surgeons will ask patients to halt the drugs 2 - 4 weeks before surgery and resume 2 - 4 weeks afterward. There are many contributing factors to consider. Some people who are at especially high risk should have longer intervals. So speak with you surgeon about your particular situation. Be sure to mention any clotting or bleeding problems that have occurred both in you and in your family. Family history in this area can be very important.
