If you can get your recommended protein grams through regular food you don't have to supplement with the powder or bars. It depends on the type of surgery you are having whether you are able to get it all through food. I have a friend who had a duodenal switch and she no longer supplements because she can eat a larger volume of food than those of us who have had the RNY. For me, it is impossible to get all of my 80 grams of protein each day with food. I can swing between 50-60 but still need that protein shake to get me up to the 80 g that my surgeon suggests. I am 5 months post op and figure that I'll probably have to continue with my breakfast shake for life.
