I applied for State Disability Insurance and got it for the whole 8 weeks I took off. It was about 2/3 of my regular salary. I also took out a loan from my 401k plan, money was the last thing I wanted to worry about after surgery. Its really no ones business who you tell or don't, its what your comfortable with. Some work places are more accepting than others and only you know. If I had it to do over again I would have said I needed time off for surgery and left it at that. The Hipaa law protects our privacy
