it is my understanding that they have to pay for their food and that it's not cheap. one person I saw interviewed mentioned "sticker shock" of most first ladies - and she said that she gently reminds them that they have professional chefs preparing the food so they pay restaurant prices.
it's not cheap and neither of the Obamas come from money, so I imagine that fast food plays a supplemental role (if it plays a role, which I don't know).
