I was on COBRA at the end of 2007. I checked around and it would have cost the same or more to go with another insurance company. I had my whole family on mine, with medical, dental, and vision. It was more than $1,000 a month on COBRA. I had been paying a few hundred a month for coverage through my employer. Insurance is really high in California. It's cheaper in other states.

The key thing to remember about insurance is that if you keep it going with COBRA, then start working elsewhere and get new insurance, your coverage continues seamlessly. It covers conditions you had under the previous insurance. If the COBRA expires or you don't get it, when you get new insurance, you won't be covered for any pre-existing conditions for the amount of time you went uninsured.

Good luck!
