If you stay with COBRA, it is the same policy you had with your employer but you have to pay the same group policy premium they would have paid for you. A group policy is always more expensive because it doesn't take into consideration a person's health, pre-existing conditions, age, BMI, etc. If you got an individual policy depending on all that above it would probably be cheaper but they might exclude any previous or ongoing conditions to get the cheapest rate. For example, if I went through my work it would cost $350 to cover my kids but with two individual policies it only costs $65 each. It really depends on what you need.
