The requirements for my approval were a stable weight for at least 1 year and a BMI below 26. Plus, I had documented rashes so I'm sure that helped the approval process.

When I re-submitted for this surgery late last year, I wasn't all that hopeful (because of the prior requirement of Braden Stage 3 ulcers in the requirements when I first submitted in 2007) but figured, "nothing ventured, nothing gained"... right?

So I was pleasantly shocked when insurance approved the surgery (my surgeon had warned me that my particular insurance had been denying the surgery and not to get my hopes up too high).

I guess the lesson learned is: don't give up. Even if you're initially denied, don't assume that this is the end of the line. It may take you a while to finally get approval, but at least don't give up after the first denial (if it happens).

My plastic surgeon did take pictures of me (actually one of the professional photographers who works at Mayo took the pictures). There were front, side, and back pictures taken of me...

The uncomfortable thing for me was the fact that the photographer was an EXTREMELY cute young lady who took my pictures. It was VERY embarrassing standing nude in front of this hot babe and having my nude body photographed. To her credit, like ALL Mayo employees, she was completely professional with me. But still... had I known she was going to be the one taking pictures, my anxiety levels would have been through the roof LONG before I went in for my consult.
