Gallbladder
I was just curious to know, for those of you that have had your gallbladder removed, how it has affected you since?
I was in WA State last week, visiting my mom, and had a hellacious attack. I have never experienced anything like it before and after 2 hours my mom made me go to the ER. It was so bad by the time I got to the hospital I was literally lying on the hall floor. After another hour and a half they got me into an exam area and the pain disappeared. I was so embarrassed... top that with a gorgeous doctor and I could have died.
Anyway, I go for an ultrasound in the morning and will also have bloodwork done. I'm not worried about having it removed... I never want to experience that pain again, I just worry about the after affects.
Any info would be awesome!

Not sure how helpful this is.. I had mine taken out in 1981. After that my only issue was that I had constant diarrhea.... I did not go anywhere without a box of immodium and the first thing I did wherever I went was to scope out where the bathrooms were.
Since my RNY 18 months ago, though I have the opposite problem. I have to take a stool softener daily.
Other than that issue, there wasn't really any other noticable change in my life pre & post op from my gall bladder.. except I was no longer in pain.
Good luck, hon. I'm sure you'll get more info from others who've had theirs removed post-WLS which will probably be more helpful.

Thanks so much Kel! I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I was thinking that may be a side effect, but like you now ~ it may make things more "normal"!

I agree with Kel. Had mine out in 2006 and I didn't have any side effects except for occasional diarrhea, depending on what I ate.

Yeah, if I ate junk I hung out in the bathroom but if I ate healthy I was fine. I had mine out in 1994.

I still have mine but my wife had hers removed while she was pregnant with our latest son. It was over a year ago. It cured most of her pregnancy sickness tho.
She still yells at me just the same as before, so I haven't noticed any real benefits to it...

That is too funny!!! Thanks for all the input guys. I had my ultrasound this morning and should know something by Monday, maybe tomorrow if I'm lucky.
The nice thing was the technician said I was "sonogenic"!!! Guess I was easy and clear to read!

It appears from your signature that you have a Gastric Band? FWIW - People who had a Bypass no longer use their Gall Bladder as designed (if they still have them). So the side effects of having it removed may not be the same. I expect that your potential side effects of having the Gall Bladder removed would not differ from that of a non-WLS (bypassed) person.
I had my Gall Bladder removed when they did my RNY in '05. If I had side effects from the GB removal, I could not differentiate them from the side effects of the RNY.

Thank for the info Jim. I actually had a gastric bypass ~ looking at my signature, I guess it may be confusing.... I think the LAP was for laproscopic.. I created it so long ago!
I'm glad to hear though, that it really hasn't affected you after it's removal.
I'm just wondering though, if we no longer "use" the organ after gastric bypass, why I would be having issues almost 4.5 years after surgery... the worst part is, that I had another attack this past Friday. I had an ultrasound done Thursday and am praying that my doc calls today. I just don't think I can go through another bout of an attack.
Thanks for your help.
