Oh my, I had that habit too. I'm a cook who cooks without recipes most of the time... so I taste test, and taste test. It used to be that by the time dinner was one, I wasn't very hungry. Of course not, I ate WHILE I was cooking. OK, so I ate dinner anyway.
Although I'm very conscious about what I put in my mouth now, I slipped when I was frosting a chocolate cake last Christmas. Yep, I licked the frosting off the spatula before washing it. One lick! What made me ever more mortified was that I didn't dump, or had no reaction to that lick whatsoever. OK, maybe more would have done it, but heck, I side effects.
But it's a habit I always had and now I find it gross. Yes, a good thing... but sometimes we do things so matter-of-factly that the act is over before it registers that we did a taboo.
The good thing is that you noticed and will work diligently to keep you hands with food away from your face while preparing. So far, so good for me, with one 'known' slip, I'm sure it will get better for you, as well.
