when I read cover letters I think that saying something that lets the reader know you actually know about the company (or the type of job - the mission) is good but not overboard.. I like that because it shows the person was interested enough in THIS job and THIS company to do some research. But a couple of sentences at most is enough. I mostly just scan the cover letter to see what the person has to say and then move on to the resume.

One I saw recently that sort of went overboard (but still stood out) said something like, "I read on your website that your agency has recently celebrated 25 years of working to end child abuse.." and then something about "I am interested in this position because of the proven track record xxx (the position) has in addressing the issues families face when dealing with abuse and neglect..." it was very on point and was exactly what we do. I think reading the company or department's mission statement and/or description of the job and being able to somehow drop that specifically in the (SHORT) cover letter makes a big point that "I want THIS job with YOUR company..."
