I LOST 17 pounds in a week!!! (follow up to "I gained 14 pounds in a month...")
After the devastating news that my surgery date was being pushed back to October 30th from October 9th, the dietician at my clinic sent me an e-mail with a calorie restricted diet. The diet is basically protein drinks and low carb Lean Cuisines or Smart Ones. I began this diet on Saturday, September 29th the day after I found out that my begging and pleading letter was not enough to convince my surgeon to let me keep my October 9th date.
There was another woman in my pre-op education class, Nicole, that gained weight as well and her surgery date was also pushed back. I asked the insurance specialist at my clinic who broke the news to me if she would send my contact info to Nicole. She did and Nicole and I have gotten together with one of the other people in the pre-op education class, as well as talked on the phone a couple of times. So at least a new friendship was gained out of the situation!
Anyway, part of the calorie restricted diet was that I would come into the clinic once a week to get weighed to make sure that I am on track to lose the 14 pounds I gained. It turns out that Nicole gained 14.5 pounds, we had originally been scheduled for the same surgery date, and we were re-scheduled for the same date. So we decided that we should go in together on Wednesday morning (October 1st) and get weighed together. She began the calorie restricted diet on Friday, September 26th and I began it on Saturday, September 27 after doing the liquid diet on Thursday and part of Friday. She lost 13 pounds and I lost 17 pounds!!! How is that for a bittersweet weight loss?!?!?
We were both thrilled that we had lost the weight, but felt sad that our surgeries had been postponed due to the weight gain as we were both positive that the only reason we gained was because we were saying goodbye and letting go of the way that we ate previously. So at that point, we had two weeks left of the calorie restricted diet, two weeks of the pre-op liquid diet, and then our surgery date would be here.
On Friday, I received a voicemail from one of the nurses at the clinic that said she was calling about my surgery date and she requested that I call her back ASAP. I of course called her right back, she asked how I was doing and I said, “nervous.” When she asked why, I said that her message about my surgery date had me a little worried. She kind of laughed and then asked what my weight was when I came in on Wednesday. After I told her that I had lost 17 pounds, she asked if I would like to move my surgery date up to October 16th. Ummmmm…..yeah!!!!! Of course I want to move it up!!! The start date of October 30th was crappy to me for so many reasons and I was so thrilled that I didn’t have to wait anymore. October 30th was a really difficult time to take time off work, I was going to miss the Celine Dion concert that I bought my mom and my aunt tickets for their birthday for, and most importantly, it was 4 days after my 30th birthday which to me signifies a new chapter of my life, and I was hoping that the surgery would be behind me instead of in front of me. (I do realize that the road ahead is going to be difficult, but at least the big step of the surgery would be done…)
Now I don’t have to worry about any of those things!!! I am on day 3.5 of my liquid diet and I am so excited that I don’t have to wait a whole month to have the surgery behind me…my date will be here in 10 days and I could not be more excited!!!
