You shouldn't have too much down time. Usually you will have a lifting restriction for up to 6 weeks, but I'm sure you are not carrying your 9 and 10 year old around, so that shouldn't be a problem.
Actually, you can involve them. Explain to them what you are doing and tell them that you will need their help carrying the laundry to the machine, bending to pick things up, etc.
