Former dental assitant; it's probably an abcess, if it swells than you'll know for sure. It could also be something as simple as your sinuses acting up though you may not even know they are; something stuck in between your gum and tooth, like a popcorn hull, those can get up there and cause a great deal of pain, especially if it's been a few days; or a cavity at the gumline where you can't see it and it's getting close to the nerve.
As for what to do until you can get in, I like the rapid release Tylenol's since Motrin is a no-no. You can keep switching between hot and cold compresses and, needless to say, no chewing on that side.
Also, try a decongestant, if it is your sinuses, the draining will help with the pain.
