Default Help

Hello,

I am almost at my 3 year anniversary. About 3 days ago I started having really bad pains that I thought was gas. I belched a lot and it kinda hurt. I figured that I had something stuck so I tried to eat soft foods the first day but it didn't help... so I have been doing liquids only since. Unfortunately the pain is getting worse so I am even afraid of drinking. I wake up feeling like I ate a huge meal in the morning and I am still belching out of bed!
My pouch hurts all the time now. Even taking a deep breath! It feels like it is in a knot. Like after you were to overdo it at the gym or after you have the flu..
I actually have an appt next Monday but I am not sure if I should or could wait that long.
Has anyone had this happen or have any suggestions?
AUGH.
Thanks Guys...

I would certainly call your doctor and let her know today. Right off the top of my head I would say it sounds like a possible ulcer. I'm 3 1/2 years out now and had very similar symptoms and I was found to have an ulcer. Also, if you still have your gallbladder it could be that too.

Things really could get worse between now and Monday so I certainly would call.

You really should be seeking medical help now.

If you can't get your appointment brought forward then I'd suggest a visit to your ER. You cannot take chances with pain in the stomach area.

Thanks Beth and Corrine,

I am getting ready to call them. I think you may be right about the ulcer. I notice that hot water doesn't hurt as cold does. Weird! Did you have that Beth?
So what do they do for an ulcer? I thought I could drink milk but I dump on milk. I havent been taking my vitamins because I am afraid they will hurt!

thanks again!

Hi Shelia, I hope you were able to speak with someone at your doctor's office.

Yes, I did notice that cold water bothered me more. The cold water would actually send me into abdominal spasms. Eventually everything hurt no matter what. The doctor will more than likely scope you. That's how an ulcer is diagnosed. If they find one they will put you on medication to help heal it. I was actually put on 3 different meds. I'm taking Prilosec, Carafate and Cytotec. I need to be on them for 3 months. For a couple weeks I went back to totally liquid protein. Anything more than liquids would cause me pain. It's been 5 weeks and I'm still struggling with the eating but its getting better. I still have a gnawing and burning feeling but things do seem to be healing. One of the biggest concerns with an ulcer is that it will start bleeding. Also ulcers can perforate or it can contribute to development of a fistula. Also at times you will find that an ulcer could cause a stricture that will need to be ballooned. So it isn't something to take lightly.

In regards to your vitamins I would recommend that you try to go to the chewable form for now. I couldn't handle especially my calcium citrate for several weeks so I purchased the Celebrate chewable to get me through until things were more healed.

Thank you so much Beth! It really helps hearing other experiences.
I emailed the receptionist and she emailed me back and said to take double doses of Prilosec, puree my food and they will see me on Monday or sooner if need be. I went right out at my break and got some. It says it can take 1to4 days to work! It better not take 4 days to help. I forgot about the chewable vitamins. Thats a good idea. I will get some tomorrow.
I was really not feeling good today at work. It was hard to even drink anything! When I got home I had a can of Chicken noodle. I tried to blend it but it didn't blend well so I didn't get much of the noodles or chicken. It went down ok but now I kind of feel nauseated and it hurts and I am still gassy.
I can't wait until morning to see how I feel.

Sheila, I'm sorry to say you probably won't see much improvement right away even with the Prilosec. I actually developed my ulcer WHILE I was taking Prilosec once a day. I now am taking Prilosec twice a day, Carafate 4 times a day and the Cytotec 3 times a day. I still have burning and bloating when I eat and its been 5 weeks. It's better. I'm finally tolerating solids again but not real well. I'm still finding I do better with the soft foods and liquids. If you can get your hands on some protein shakes go with those. Or if you have a GNC near you try some of the Isopure.

It really does sound like an ulcer. They are miserable. Mine actually was triggering MAJOR abdominal spasms for me that landed me in the hospital for 5 days before I could tolerate even the liquids well enough to get in my liquids and protein.

Default A follow up

Hi Beth and Corrine,

I just thought I would fill you in on the latest since you were so helpful to me.
I saw the Nurse about my problem and after she listened to all my symptoms she immediately said that it sounds like I have a hernia and she wanted to know if I wanted to schedule an appt for it. She said there isn't really a test to see if you have it....they just have to go in there laprascopicly and look for it and fix it. She said it was an outpatient thing and not too much involved. I think she was trying to keep me calm! Apparently I had a look on my face that backed her up a bit. I was just surprised. I guess I had already diagnosed myself as having an ulcer. I mean even the Prilosec helped. I kept second guessing her though. I guess that was a bad thing! Well, then I asked her why am I so gassy... she said maybe I am lactose intolerant and told me not to have my Unjury protein and switch to soy based and take Lactaid anytime I have any dairy. Oh yeah she told me to stick to liquids and pureed food too and then come back in three weeks.

You know what I am a bad patient! I left there and went and ate. I have been eating with no problem at all up until Monday. I started getting that feeling again and it is getting worse so I am going to do the liquids like I was supposed to do anyway. I haven't done the lactaid yet because I haven't had a chance to get to the store but I am staying away from milk products so that couldn’t be the issue anyway.
I don’t know what to think now. I know I am a bad patient!
