My God! That sounds like my mom. My grandmother was always on her about losing weight. She was on a diet of one type or another all her life. It was a nightmare at times. She had so many health problems, and I'm sure a lot of it was the losing/gaining bit. At one point, in the late 60's she had so many medications for so many different things I never knew what I was walking into when I came home from school! She had terrible mood swings, and a temper like you wouldn't believe. Yes, she had an addiction, and she finally kicked it. But never really did overcome her weight problem.
My grandmother didn't believe anyone should be "fat". She started in on mom about me. Mom did stand up for me and told her very bluntly never to say anything to me about my size, and she never did.
